ENGLISH VERSION

1970. Clint Eastwood is not yet an absolute Star. His filmography remains rather thin even if he had some great successes with Sergio Leone (For a Fistful of Dollars, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly) and Don Siegel (A Sheriff in New York, Sierra Torride). At the time, nothing that was not really considered exceptional. However, he is attracted to filmmaking and feels able direct thanks to his production company Malpaso and a handful of employees in whom he has complete trust. Universal accepts as long as the budget is small. Banco! Play Misty for Me will mark the emergence of an atypical filmmaker, who will not really be taken seriously, locked in the image of the violent cop he will give with his character of Dirty Harry (1972). The critics remain polite but cautious about his ambitions, even hostile like Pauline Kael, whom he will ask for a psychiatric analysis, after she had called him a fascist, to publicly deduce that she just wanted to have sex with him. But the audience follows him if he is on the screen. In fact, only Breezy (1973), poorly sold, proved to be a shipwreck at the box office and pushed him to start considering a divorce with Universal. A definitive decision after The Eiger Sanction (1975) and a new life with Warner.

Productive, Clint Eastwood will make six films during this period. He will play the icons of the western (The High Plains Drifter, The Outlaw Josey Wales), try his hand at sentimental drama (Breezy), spy film (The Eiger Sanction), thriller (Play Misty for Me) and hard action film (The Gauntlet). To shoot his own movies, Clint Eastwood invests in a few less rigorous productions whose aim is to guarantee his artistic autonomy. If he continues his collaboration with Donald Siegel (4 films), he uses his instinct and discovers new talents like Michael Cimino, who he asks to rewrite Magnum Force (after Terrence Malick and John Milius have worked on it) before producing his first director effort, Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (1974). But this decade will above all be the implementation of the “Eastwood system“: public successes will make it possible to finance more ambitious works steeped in a few founding themes: the lonesome hero, the wide open spaces, the fine line between good and evil, the condemnation of society and the corruption of its institutions. The next step will be to dig a little deeper.
