Leprous – Pitfall

Bien réglé sur le rythme soutenu d’un nouvel album studio bi-annuel, les norvégiens de Leprous reviennent donc en 2019 avec un septième opus à l’épaisseur inattendue. Douloureux dans sa conception largement prise en main par le chanteur/claviériste Einra Solberg, ce dernier était alors dans une période dépressive compliquée qui donne à ce Pitfall les apparats d’un exutoire qui tranche fondamentalement avec le reste de leur discographie partagée entre des caresses musicales façon Massive Attack et du ferrugineux. Ici, le registre du sombre et de la plainte est toujours compensé par un feeling et une expressivité vocale frémissante.

Pitfall donne le ton avec l’introductif « Below » sur lequel les hauteurs frôlées par Solberg offrent le frisson attendu. Surtout, l’écriture instrumentale, ajoutée à une production illuminée par Adam Noble (Placebo, Biffy Clyro), renforcera le débat des fans vis-à-vis du passé. C’est peut-être la fameuse maturité qui tape dans le mille. L’album peut dès lors enchaîner, parfois dans un registre qui pourrait faire penser au Muse de la grande époque.

Sans jamais se résigner au sentimental, Leprous signe quelques déflagrations qui saignent les mélodies (« At the Bottom ») sans jamais pousser à fond les potards du cafard. Certains esprits chagrins (il y en a) trouveront ces instants trop rares, trop éparses, au milieu de titres qui ne prennent pas le risque de vouloir tout réinventer. Des morceaux comme « Observe the Train » ou « At the Bottom » déploient une structure qui pourront sembler trop lisse vis-à-vis d’albums aussi remarqués que Coal (2011) ou Bilateral (2013). Et malgré « Foreigner » et surtout « The Sky is Red », avec sa structure plus alambiquée, les fans trépigneront. Insatisfaits de ne pas retrouver tout à fait le groupe là où ils pensent qu’il devrait être. Aussi réussi soit-il dans sa forme, qui trouve ici un équilibre constant, c’est bien dans sa dynamique plus pop et accessible que Pitfall ne manquera pas de diviser.

Well adjusted to the rhythm of a new biannual studio album, the Norwegians from Leprous are back in 2019 with a seventh opus with an unexpected thickness. Painful in its conception, largely taken in hand by the singer/keyboardist Einra Solberg, the latter was then in a complicated depressive period which gave this Pitfall the appearance of an outlet that contrasts fundamentally with the rest of their discography divided between musical caresses in the Massive Attack style and ferruginous ones. Here, the register of darkness and complaint is always compensated by a feeling and a quivering vocal expressiveness.

Pitfall sets the tone with the introductory “Below” on which the heights brushed by Solberg offer the expected thrill. Above all, the instrumental writing, combined with a production illuminated by Adam Noble (Placebo, Biffy Clyro), will strengthen the fans’ debate about the past. Maybe it’s the famous maturity that’s hitting the nail on the head. The album can then follow on, sometimes in a register that could remind us of the Muse of the great era.

Without ever resigning himself to the sentimental, Leprous signs some deflagrations that bleed the melodies (” At the Bottom “) without ever pushing the potards of the cockroach to the limit. Some sad minds (there are some) will find these moments too rare, too scattered, in the middle of titles that do not take the risk of wanting to reinvent everything. Songs like “Observe the Train” or “At the Bottom” have a structure that may seem too smooth compared to such notable albums as Coal (2011) or Bilateral (2013). And despite “Foreigner” and especially “The Sky is Red“, with its more convoluted structure, the fans will be thrilled. Dissatisfied with not being able to find the group exactly where they think it should be. However successful it may be in its form, which finds a constant balance here, it is in its more pop and accessible dynamics that Pitfall will not fail to divide.
