Himmellegeme – Variola Vera

Q/dropcap]uatre ans après Myth of Earth (2017), passé relativement inaperçu malheureusement, les norvégiens de Himmellegeme reviennent nous titiller les esgourdes avec Variola Vera, un album courtaud d’un peu moins de quarante minutes mais qui a l’avantage de ne pas avoir de gras. Le quintet nous avait habitué à des ambiances qui mélangent avec une réelle maestria un rock psychédélique avec du prog symphonique et une touche de post-rock, le tout mâtiné de morosité jamais trop dépressive, que l’on pourrait rapprocher de Gazpacho pour rester dans les influences locales. Ici, le ton est plus chaud, moins ténébreux, plus rythmé également. Le groupe embrasse une musique plus accessible, plus pop même (l’exquis « Blowing Raspberries », « Caligula »), parfois, mais sans jamais sombrer dans la facilité. En travaillant plus encore son atmosphérique hypnotique (« Brother », « Let the Mother Turn »), le groupe s’amuse à varier les plaisirs et se permet de marcher sur les traces du Porcupine Tree de Lightbulb Sun avec « Heart Listening » et de Sigur Ros avec « Agafia ». Des modèles qui n’écrasent pour autant jamais un album à la fois sensible et subtile. Surtout, Variola Vera permet à Himmellegeme d’offrir un second opus très réussi dont on ne peut qu’attendre la suite avec impatience.

Four years after Myth of Earth (2017), which unfortunately went relatively unnoticed, the Norwegians of Himmellegeme come back to tickle our ears with Variola Vera, a short album of a little less than forty minutes but which has the advantage of not having any fat. The quintet had accustomed us to ambiences which mix with a real mastery a psychedelic rock with symphonic prog and a touch of post-rock, the whole mixed with moroseness never too depressive, that we could bring closer to Gazpacho to remain in the local influences. Here, the tone is warmer, less gloomy, more rhythmic too. The band embraces a more accessible music, more pop even (the exquisite “Blowing Raspberries”, “Caligula”), sometimes, but without ever sinking into the easy way. By working even more its hypnotic atmospheric (“Brother”, “Let the Mother Turn”), the group has fun to vary the pleasures and allows itself to walk in the footsteps of Porcupine Tree of Lightbulb Sun with “Heart Listening” and of Sigur Ros with “Agafia”. Models that never overwhelm an album both sensitive and subtle. Above all, Variola Vera allows Himmellegeme to offer a very successful second opus of which we can only wait for the continuation with impatience.
