Transatlantic – The Absolute Universe

Dans un monde tourneboulé par une dose au carré d’incertitudes, il est toujours bon de retrouver quelques fondamentaux, ces remparts auxquels se raccrocher le temps d’une ballade. Et plus si affinités. C’est le cas, au centuple, avec le sixième album de Transatlantic (six ans après Kaleidoscope, 2014) mystérieusement intitulé The Absolute Universe. Conceptuel ? Selon Neal Morse, aucun doute. Comme il ne fait aucun doute que le découpage à la pièce de l’œuvre pourrait tout aussi bien être réuni en un morceau unique à la manière de Whirlwind (2009) dont The Absolute Universe avait un temps été envisagé comme la suite, quitte à avoir quelques clin d’œil ici et là (« Take Now My Soul », « Owl Howl »).

Mais voilà, Neal Morse aura mis un peu le boxon dans la mécanique extrêmement huilée de notre quatuor, toujours complété des inénarrables Roine Stolt (The Flower Kings), Mike Portnoy (Sons of Apollo, Flying Colors) et Pete Trewavas (Marillion). En coupant ici et là un premier mix formaté double album pour une version plus courte et ramassée, il compliqua suffisamment les choses pour que ses acolytes choisissent de ne pas choisir. Car The Absolute Universe ne se présente pas uniquement comme un concept décliné en version courte intitulée « Breath of Life » avec 14 titres étalés sur 64 minutes et son pendant allongé « Forevermore » qui propose 18 titres pour 90 minutes de festivités. Mais contrairement à Marbles (2004) de Marillion, la version « longue » n’est pas qu’une extension, une complétude. Non. Transatlantic vise plus loin en modifiant carrément la liste des titres, les paroles ou leur interprète. Quel bazar ! Au final, nous avons donc bien deux albums (on passera sur la version Blu-ray intégrale). Si loin, si proches. Issus du même embryon mais séparés à la naissance.

On pourrait dès lors délirer sur ce qui les différencie, notamment les titres « Reaching for the Sky », « Take Now My Soul », « Heart Like a Whirlwind », « Swing High, Swing Low », « Bully », « Rainbow Sky », « The World We Used to Know », « The Sun Comes Up Today » et « Lonesome Rebel » qui ne se partagent pas d’une version à l’autre. Mais l’essentiel n’est pas là. En livrant ces deux propositions, Transatlantic s’expose aux interrogations sur la démarche. Forcément. Et comme toujours, certains verront dans la version « Forevermore » le véritable ADN du groupe quand d’autres lui préfèreront la concision de « Breath of Life ». Faut-il choisir son camp ? Est-ce vraiment important ? Et pourquoi je vous demande cela ?

En se posant un peu, il vaut mieux laisser la musique parler pour elle. Et de ce point de vue, nos quatre amis font le job. Et quel job ! Alors oui, la surprise n’est pas fondamentalement au rendez-vous. Nous sommes en terrain connu. Difficile de ne pas reconnaître la main mise si reconnaissable de Neal Morse (« Overture », « Rainbow Sky », « Swing High, Swing Low ») et Roine Stolt (« Owl Howl », « Belong ») sur les compositions. Mais l’enchainement virevolte toujours avec ces musiciens de haute volée qui prennent un plaisir évident à jouer ensemble. Ce sentiment transpire sur chaque note et nous offre un voyage agrémenté de titres luxuriants (« The Greatest Story Never Ends ») dans la tradition d’un prog rock à ciel ouvert, avec ses morceaux de bravoure sans minauderie, ses excès, ses débordements contrôlés qui ne sombrent jamais en eau trouble. Par leur densité, ces deux albums submergent, évitent le maniérisme ou la recette calculée d’une hyperactivité musicale sous contrôle. Surgit cette sensation euphorique d’un groupe et non d’un supergroupe aux égos hypertrophiés. Ce cœur qui les fait pulser et nous avec, déborde, jaillit sur ces albums qui ne se détournent jamais de leur origine sans pour autant se vautrer dans la facilité. Quelle que soit sa version et sous ses lustres imposants, The Absolute Universe permet une nouvelle fois à Transatlantic d’atteindre des sommets.

In a world turned upside down by a squared dose of uncertainties, it is always good to find some fundamentals, these ramparts to which to hang on for the time of a musical journey. And not so much any more. This is the case with Transatlantic‘s sixth album (six years after Kaleidoscope, 2014) mysteriously entitled The Absolute Universe. Is it a concept album? According to Neal Morse, no doubt about it. As there is no doubt that the piecemeal cut of the work could just as well be reunited in a single piece in the same way than Whirlwind (2009), of which The Absolute Universe was at one time envisaged as the sequel, even if it means having a few nods here and there (“Take Now My Soul“, “Owl Howl“).

But then, Neal Morse will have put the box a bit in the extremely oiled mechanics of our quartet, always completed by the inarguable Roine Stolt (The Flower Kings), Mike Portnoy (Sons of Apollo, Flying Colors) and Pete Trewavas (Marillion). Cutting here and there from a first mix formatted double album for a shorter, picked up version, he complicated things enough for his acolytes to choose not to choose. For The Absolute Universe is not only a concept in a short version entitled “Breath of Life” with 14 tracks spread over 64 minutes and its extended counterpart “Forevermore” which offers 18 tracks for 90 minutes of fireworks. But unlike Marbles (2004) by Marillion, the “long” version is not just an extension, a completeness. No. Transatlantic aims further by modifying the list of titles, the lyrics or their interpreter. What?! In the end, we have two albums… (and don’t forget the full & complete Blu-ray version). So far, so close. From the same embryo but separated at birth.

We could then rave about what differentiates them, notably the tracks ” Reaching for the Sky “, ” Take Now My Soul “, ” Heart Like a Whirlwind “, ” Swing High, Swing Low “, ” Bully “, ” Rainbow Sky “, ” The World We Used to Know “, ” The Sun Comes Up Today ” and ” Lonesome Rebel ” which are not shared from one version to the other. But that’s not the point. By delivering these two proposals, Transatlantic exposes itself to questions about the approach. And as always, some will see in the “Forevermore” version the true DNA of the band, while others will prefer the conciseness of “Breath of Life“. Should we choose sides? Does it really matter? And why am I asking you this? (just smile)

By asking yourself a little, it’s better to let the music speak for itself. And from that point of view, the four virtuoses do the job. And what a job! So yes, it’s not basically a surprise. We are on familiar ground. It’s hard not to recognise the so recognisable hand of Neal Morse (“Overture“, “Rainbow Sky“, “Swing High, Swing Low“) and Roine Stolt (“Owl Howl“, “Belong“) on the writing. But the sequence always twists and turns with these top-notch musicians who take obvious pleasure in playing together. This feeling is in every part of music and offers us a journey embellished with luxuriant titles (“The Greatest Story Never Ends“) in the tradition of open-air prog rock, with its pieces of bravery, its excesses, its controlled outbursts that never sink into murky water. By their density, these two albums submerge, avoid mannerism or the calculated recipe of a musical hyperactivity under control. The notion of a true band and not just a supergroupe full of egos, is the very heart that makes them pulse and us with them. This feeling overflows, spouts out on these albums that never turn away from their origin without wallowing in the ease. Whatever its version, The Absolute Universe once again allows Transatlantic to reach new heights.
