Nad Sylvan - Spiritus Mundi
4.3TOP 2021

ENGLISH VERSION

cruising rhythm. With an album every two years, our friend Nad Sylvan is not idle. After completing his trilogy around the Vampirate, a fictional person he created from scratch with Courting the Widow (2015), The Bride Said No (2017) and The Regal Bastard (2019), here he is back with Spiritus Mundi and a bunch of musicians ready to do battle: Andrew Laitres, Tony Levin, Jonas Reingold, Steve Hackett and Mirkko De Maio sneak up on the nine rather collected titles. See, no title is longer than seven minutes. A challenge! But make no mistake ! With its texts taken from poems by William Butler (WB) Yeats (except for the bonus “You’ve Got to Find a Way”), the subject is not lazy but rather in a dark romanticism carried by atmospheres paradoxically never too heavy. Without ever relying on the force of words alone, the evils expressed are enveloped in a subtle instrumentation where harmony predominates rather than an immoderate taste for untimely solos. If listening can frustrate the contemptors of long demonstrative tracks, there is no doubt that the album will be touching with its melodic meaning and the quality of a subtle and unaffected interpretation. With swaying titles like “The Second Coming” (what a rhythm!), Spiritus Mundi opens its universe to as many people as possible, who avoids the trap of emphasis without ever forcing on the sugar. A performance !
