The Neal Morse Band – Innocence & Danger

Badaboum ! Le Neal Morse Band revient au galop. Après un première double ration en 2016 (Similitude of a Dream) et la rebelotte en 2019 (The Great Adventure) il fallait garder le rythme. Conséquence, Innocence & Danger déboule et envoie de nouveau le pâté sur ses deux tranches de pain complet. La routine ! Seule (petite) nouveauté, l’agencement des titres répartis ici entre morceaux plus ramassés d’un côté (Innocence) et les deux commodes à tiroirs de l’autre (Danger). Et ce n’est pas faute d’avoir essayé de limiter la voilure. Bill Hubauer (claviers) et Randy George (basse) ont beau avoir tout fait pour échapper à un nouvel album-concept pour revenir à quelque chose de plus organique et naturel, ils allaient rapidement se frotter à l’inspiration débridée de leurs comparses avant de se retrouver une fois encore avec beaucoup trop de matière pour se contenter d’un simple album. Il faut préciser qu’avec Neal Morse (claviers, chant), Mike Portnoy (batterie) et Eric Gillette (guitares, chant), tous les compteurs étaient au vert pour laisser libre court à des compositions pour le moins débridées. Le résultat confortera chaque camp sur ses positions et ne fera évidemment pas sauter au plafond les habituels râleurs tant Innocence & Danger joue en terrain conquis. En travaillant au corps son propre ADN, le groupe ne s’écarte jamais de ce qu’il a pu produire auparavant. Évidemment, le résultat reste de haute volée tant sur le plan des compositions, qui savent toujours jouer les funambules, que sur l’interprétation où chaque musicien brille sans écraser les pieds de son voisin. C’est ici toute la force du Neal Morse Band  : une cohésion à toute épreuve et un bonheur évident de jouer ensemble qui colore un album qui ne révolutionnera aucunement la discographie des uns et des autres mais qui ne saurait l’entacher, que ce soit avec les réjouissants « Bird on a Wire », « Your Place to the Sun », l’instrumentale « Emergence » (très Spock’s Beard période “The Doorway” et “Chautauqua“), le plus mélancolique « Not Afraid pt. 1 » ou la reprise un peu maigre de « Bridge Over Troubled Water » (Simon & Garfunkel). Ce sont surtout les circonvolutions de « Not Afraid pt. 2 » et la demi-heure de jeu de « Beyond the Years » qui donneront du fil à retordre à tous les contempteurs des projets estampillés de près ou de loin Neal Morse tant ils travaillent au corps la moëlle prog-rock. Et s’ils ne surprennent pas tant que ça dans le résultat des courses, ces cinq-là étonnent une fois encore par leur capacité à produire de belles choses.

The Neal Morse Band is back at full gallop. After a first double album in 2016 (Similitude of a Dream) and the same in 2019 (The Great Adventure) it was necessary to keep the rhythm. As a result, Innocence & Danger comes out and once again sends the pate on its two slices of wholemeal bread. Like a routine! The only (small) novelty is the arrangement of the tracks, divided here between more compact pieces on one side (Innocence) and the two big ones on the other (Danger). And it’s not for lack of trying to limit the wings. Bill Hubauer (keyboards) and Randy George (bass) may have done everything to avoid a new concept album in order to come back to something more organic and natural, but they were quickly confronted with the unbridled inspiration of their friends before ending up once again with too much material to be satisfied with a simple album. It must be said that with Neal Morse (keyboards, vocals), Mike Portnoy (drums) and Eric Gillette (guitars, vocals), all the counters were in the green to open wide their compositions. The result will confirm each camp on its positions as Innocence & Danger plays on conquered ground. By working on their own DNA, the band never deviates from what they’ve produced before. Obviously, the result remains high-flying as much on the level of the compositions, which always know how to play the tightrope walker, as on the interpretation where each musician shines without crushing his neighbour’s feet. This is the strength of the Neal Morse Band: an unfailing cohesion and an obvious happiness to play together that colours an album that won’t revolutionize the discography of each of them, but that won’t spoil it, whether it’s with the delightful “Bird on a Wire”, “Your Place to the Sun”, the instrumental “Emergence” (very Spock’s Beard period, “The Doorway” and “Chautauqua”), the more melancholic “Not Afraid pt. 1” or  the cover of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” (Simon & Garfunkel). It’s especially the convolutions of “Not Afraid pt. 2” and the half hour of “Beyond the Years” that will give a hard time to all the contemptuous of the projects stamped with Neal Morse’s name, so much they work on the marrow prog-rock material. And if they don’t surprise that much in the end of the album, these five guys surprise once again by their capacity to produce beautiful things.
