Le premier son de Ghost semble sortir de nulle part. Angoissant. Comme un scare jump de film d’horreur qui vous filerait un frisson sans partage. Les premiers instants de « Dullahan » provoquent ainsi un sentiment de malaise pour ce nouvel EP de Long Distance Calling. Car non contents d’avoir prodigué l’un des meilleurs albums de 2020 (How Do We Want to Live), les allemands reviennent déjà avec un EP sous le bras et pas n’importe lequel. Les six morceaux proposés pour un peu plus d’une demi-heure d’inédits déboulent faute de pouvoir porter le dernier album studio sur les planches, face au public. Comme beaucoup d’autres artistes, cette contrainte aura poussé le groupe à rester productif et pied au plancher. Trois jours de jams enregistrés dans les conditions d’un live. Une expérience qui se rapproche du précédent EP Nighthawk en 2014. Qu’à cela ne tienne, Long Distance Calling prolonge son travail récent, savant mélange de guitares telluriques, de groove plus électro et disparition progressive d’un chant qui n’était pas dans l’ADN du groupe mais qui avait fait peu à peu son apparition. Le tout tape du poing sur la table et nous fait taper du pied en dessous. Dès la rythmique cool sortie des eighties de « Old Love » l’atmosphère est là, bouillonnante, entre vapeur et explosions. Deux titres mastocs élèvent encore le débat dans l’excellence au-delà des huit minutes : « Seance » avec son déroulé hypnotique et « Negative Is the New Positive » pour un final plus qu’excitant. Un sans faute qui fait de ce Ghost un prolongement idéal pour tous les amateurs de post-rock de haut vol et de musique instrumentale qui vous donnent envie de décoller.

Ghost’s first sound seems to come out of nowhere. Anguishing. Like a scare jump from a horror movie that will give you an unparalleled thrill. The first moments of “Dullahan” thus provoke a feeling of unease for this new EP of Long Distance Calling. The band produced one of the best albums of 2020 (How Do We Want to Live) and the six tracks previously unreleased are unable to carry the latest studio album on the boards, in front of the public. Like many other artists, this constraint will have pushed the group to stay productive and down to earth. Three days of jams recorded under live conditions. An experience that is similar to the previous EP Nighthawk in 2014. Never mind, Long Distance Calling extends its recent work, a clever mix of telluric guitars, more electro groove and the gradual disappearance of a song that was not in the DNA of the group but which had gradually made its appearance. Everything bangs on the table and makes us stomp underneath. From the cool rhythm of the eighties of “Old Love” the atmosphere is there, bubbling, between steam and explosions. Two other titles still keep the mojo to excellence beyond the eight minutes: “Seance” with its hypnotic unfolding and “Negative Is the New Positive” for a more than exciting final. An impeccable piece of music that makes this Ghost an ideal extension for all lovers of high-flying post-rock and instrumental music that make you want to take off.
