Steve Hackett – The Circus and the Nightwhale

Malgré ses soixante-dix ans bien tassés, Steve Hackett poursuit son chemin, en revisitant Genesis lors de tournées à succès mais aussi, surtout, au fil d’une discographie solo qui ne lasse pas de surprendre par sa densité et sa qualité. Pour son trentième album studio au titre intrigant The Circus and the Nightwhale, le guitariste n’a pas cherché à jouer la carte de l’étirement inutile, du trop-plein sans vergogne. Moins de trois quart d’heure pour treize titres et un concept plus autobiographique qu’à l’accoutumé.

En travaillant la chose comme une bande originale de film, Hackett peut dès lors s’amuser de bruitages éparses, d’ambiances bienvenues et d’une continuité tenue. Le soin apporté à l’ensemble ne dénote jamais. Qu’il nous balance un riff carnassier (« People of the Smoke« ) ou qu’il se balade sur un fil de légèreté (« The Passing Clouds« , « Found and Lost« ), Steve Hackett connait son affaire. Le style est reconnaissable. Le mélange des humeurs, caractéristique. Le mid-tempo accrocheur « Taking You Down » interprété par l’inséparable Nad Sylvan ou la ballade « Ghost Moon and Living Love » en sont de parfaits exemples, en préambule de l’oriental « Circo Inferno » et des plus métalliques « Got me Out » et « Breakout« . Mais le sens de la grandeur n’a pas abandonné notre ami ni la pléthore de grands musiciens qui l’accompagnent, de Roger King (claviers) à Rob Townsend (saxophone) en passant par John Hackett (flute), Jonas Reingold (basse), Craig Blundell (batterie) ou Nick D’Virgilio (batterie) parmi d’autres. Autant dire que tout ce petit monde s’amuse, et plus encore, à donner vie à ce rite initiatique déroulé sous forme de conte fantastique et fantasmé dont la morale d’un amour salvateur pourra faire sourire les plus cyniques. Pour autant, la sincérité du propos est là.

Et si The Circus and the Nightwhale n’est peut-être pas l’album qui résumera la carrière du guitariste, un vœu difficile à réaliser à l’audition de la somme musicale qu’il a pu livrer jusqu’ici, il s’inscrit dans la continuité sans pour autant se compromettre dans une répétition assommante ce qui est déjà gage d’une belle réussite

Despite his seventy years, Steve Hackett continues his path, revisiting Genesis during successful tours but also, above all, throughout a solo discography which never tires of surprising with its density and quality. For his thirtieth studio album with the intriguing title The Circus and the Nightwhale, the guitarist did not seek to play the card of unnecessary stretching, of shameless overflow. Less than three quarters of an hour for thirteen titles and a more autobiographical concept than usual. By working on the thing like a film soundtrack, Hackett can therefore have fun with scattered sound effects, welcome atmospheres and sustained continuity. The care taken throughout never stands out. Whether he throws a carnivorous riff (« People of the Smoke ») or walks on a thread of lightness (« The Passing Clouds », « Found and Lost »), Steve Hackett knows his stuff. The style is recognizable. The characteristic mixture of moods. The catchy mid-tempo « Taking You Down » performed by the inseparable Nad Sylvan or the ballad « Ghost Moon and Living Love » are perfect examples, as a preamble to the oriental « Circo Inferno » and the more metallic « Got me Out” and “Breakout”. But the sense of greatness has not abandoned our friend nor the plethora of great musicians who accompany him, from Roger King (keyboards) to Rob Townsend (saxophone) via John Hackett (flute), Jonas Reingold (bass) , Craig Blundell (drums) or Nick D’Virgilio (drums) among others. Suffice it to say that all these little people are having fun, and even more, bringing to life this initiatory rite unfolded in the form of a fantastic and fantasized tale whose moral of a saving love will make the most cynical smile. However, the sincerity of the words is there. And if The Circus and the Nightwhale is perhaps not the album that will sum up the guitarist’s career, a wish difficult to achieve when hearing the musical sum that he has been able to deliver so far, it is inscribed in continuity without compromising itself in a boring repetition which is already a guarantee of great success.
