The Pineapple Thief – It Leads to This

Quatre ans après Versions of the Truth, à propos duquel certains avaient pu mégoter sur une légère impression de “déjà-entendu”, The Pineapple Thief revient en ce début d’année remettre un peu d’huile sur le feu. Pour le quatrième album dans sa formation actuelle, à savoir avec Gavin Harrison derrière les fûts, le groupe ne dérive pas de sa trajectoire. It Lead to This poursuit dans sa recherche de vibrations qui raisonnent à la fois de façon très personnelle sans jamais voiler les choses. La mélancolie est toujours présente. Un spleen en marque de fabrique qui accroche It Leads to This de ses atmosphères tour à tour vaporeuses et aiguisées. Déchirantes. Sur cet équilibre précaire mais toujours tenu, le groupe peut compter sur Harrison qui délivre une fois encore une partition impeccable, toujours inventive, loin d’être prévisible. En support de la voix de Bruce Soord, jamais plaintive malgré les paysages traversés, les choses pourront une fois encore sembler répéter ce que les Britanniques avaient pu proposer au fil des albums. Peut-être manque-t-il de véritable surprise, mais faut-il blâmer un artiste de repasser le trait, de creuser un sillon aussi fertile ? Tout est évidemment dans l’attente que l’on peut avoir. Les amateurs du Bruce Soord du début des années 2000 pourront être contrariés qu’il ne revienne toujours pas à des formats plus développés, aventureux. D’autres chipoteront sur une singularité estompée au film des albums. Rien de nouveau. Depuis 25 ans, The Pineapple Thief avance dans son univers, quelque soit le chemin emprunté. Toujours solidement épaulé par la basse volubile de John Sykes et les claviers de Steve Kitch, Bruce Soord alterne le chaud et le froid, parfois à coup de riffs rageurs (« Rubycon », « The Frost ») ou de groove bien balancé (« Put it Right », « Every Trace of Us »), parfois sur quelque chose de plus dénudé (« It Leads To This », « It Leads to Us »). Le travail effectué sur la production, absolument remarquable, ajoute au calibrage méticuleux de cet album qui ne révolutionnera pas l’histoire de The Pineapple Thief mais ajoutera une nouvelle réussite à une discographie déjà peu avare en grands albums.

Four years after Versions of the Truth, about which some may have discussed a slight feeling of “deja heard”, The Pineapple Thief returns at the start of the year to add a little fuel to the fire. For the fourth album in its current formation, namely with Gavin Harrison behind the drums, the group does not drift from its trajectory. It Lead to This continues in its search for vibrations that resonate in a very personal way without ever veiling things. The melancholy is always present. A trademark spleen which hooks It Leads to This with its atmospheres which are by turns vaporous and sharp. Heartbreaking. On this precarious but always maintained balance, the group can count on Harrison who once again delivers an impeccable score, always inventive, far from predictable. Supporting the voice of Bruce Soord, never plaintive despite the landscapes crossed, things will once again seem to repeat what the British had been able to offer over the albums. Perhaps there is a lack of real surprise, but should an artist be blamed for going over the line, for plowing such a fertile furrow? Everything is obviously in the expectation that one can have. Fans of Bruce Soord from the early 2000s may be upset that he still hasn’t returned to more developed or adventurous formats. Others will quibble over a blurred singularity in the film of the albums. Nothing new. For 25 years, The Pineapple Thief has been moving forward in its universe which it offers us to share whatever the path taken. Always solidly supported by the voluble bass of John Sykes and the keyboards of Steve Kitch, Bruce Soord alternates hot and cold, sometimes with angry riffs (“Rubycon”, “The Frost”) or well-balanced groove (“Put it Right”, “Every Trace of Us”), sometimes on something more bare (“It Leads To This”, “It Leads to Us”). The work done on the production, absolutely remarkable, adds to the meticulous calibration of this album which will not revolutionize the history of The Pineapple Thief but will add a new success to a discography already full of great albums.
