A.C.T. – Heatwave

A/dropcap].C.T. fut l’un des fleurons de la résurgence prog rock – et de sa vague dite « nordique » – de la fin des années 90, début des années 2000 avec Today’s Report (1999) et Last Epic (2003). Un peu passée sous Silence (2006) avec un hiatus de plusieurs années, la formation ma suédoise était revenue aux affaire avec Circus Pandemonium en 2014. Soit. Depuis, plus grand-chose hormis Rebirth, leur premier EP sorti en 2019 et, cette année, le second essai dans la catégorie sobrement intulé Heatwave. Cinq titres (si on enlève les quarante secondes planantes et bucoliques introductives) généreux qui retrouvent les atmosphères escarpées habituelles mais toujours parfaitement produites. Porté par la guitare de Ola Andersson et les claviers de Jerry Sahlin, le quintet nous embarque une petite demi-heure dans les affres d’un homme qui voit son mariage imploser. Le caractère plutôt sombre du concept n’empêche pas des accents groovy qui flirtent avec le funk (« Checked Out »), le jazzy (« Bother ») voire carrément lumineux en format oxymore musical (« The Breakup »). La basse de Peter Asp reste toujours aussi volubile et funambule, et tout cela nous fait penser à un mélange détonnant entre Rush, Toto, Shadow Gallery, The Flower Kings et même Dream Theater. Quoi de plus logique en somme pour A.C.T. qui a toujours su fureter un peu partout, trouver l’inspiration, sans aspirer pour autant. En conservant la mélodie en ligne de mire, le groupe s’amuse à tisser des morceaux qui virevoltent sans jamais perdre l’auditeur. Même lorsque le ton revient sur des volutes plus mélancoliques (« Dark Clouds »), et ce n’est certainement pas leur style le plus confortable, le groupe n’en demeure pour autant jamais dépressif. Et ils n’en restent pas là puisque groupe préfèrera en finir avec « Breakup », nettement plus festif, à la limite d’un titre de musical qui permet à chaque musicien de sonner à fond les ballons. Un final qui fera nécessairement regretter que A.C.T. n’ait pas choisi le format d’un album complet mais qui, en ces temps de disette et aux vues de la fréquence de leurs apparitions, n’est certainement pas à mettre de côté. A.C.T. was one of the flagships of the prog rock resurgence – and its so-called « Nordic wave » – of the late 90s, early 2000s with Today’s Report (1999) and Last Epic (2003). A little passed under Silence (2006) with a hiatus of several years, the Swedish formation had returned to business with Circus Pandemonium in 2014. So be it. Since then, not much else except Rebirth, their first EP released in 2019 and, this year, the second attempt in the category soberly titled Heatwave. Five tracks (if we take away the forty seconds soaring and bucolic introductive) generous that find the usual steep atmospheres but always perfectly produced. Carried by Ola Andersson’s guitar and Jerry Sahlin’s keyboards, the quintet embarks us for half an hour in the torments of a man who sees his marriage imploding. The rather dark character of the concept does not prevent groovy accents which flirt with the funk (« Checked Out »), the jazzy (« Bother ») or even downright luminous in musical oxymoron format (« The Breakup »). Peter Asp’s bass remains as voluble and tightrope walker as ever, and all this makes us think of an explosive mix between Rush, Toto, Shadow Gallery, The Flower Kings and even Dream Theater. What could be more logical for A.C.T. who has always known how to snoop around, find inspiration, without aspiring to it. By keeping the melody in the line of sight, the group has fun weaving pieces that twirl without ever losing the listener. Even when the tone returns on more melancholic volutes (« Dark Clouds »), and it is certainly not their most comfortable style, the band never remains depressive. And they don’t stay there since the band prefers to end with « Breakup », much more festive, on the verge of a musical title that allows each musician to sound like a balloon. A final which will necessarily make regret that A.C.T. did not choose the format of a complete album but which, in these times of shortage and in view of the frequency of their appearances, is certainly not to be put aside. On the contrary.
