Big Big Train - Common Ground
4.0TOP 2021

ENGLISH VERSION

Let’s take the departures of Danny Manners and Rachel Hall off the horizon straight away: The Big Big Train adventure was not going to go off track. Despite everything, the pandemic, the physical distances (England, Sweden, United States), this thirteenth album of the band sounds like a new step composed around the solid quartet David Longdon (vocals), Gregory Spawton (bass), Rikard Sjöblom ( guitars, keyboards, vocals) and Nick D’Virgilio (drums, vocals). Recorded in particular at Peter Gabriel’s Real World studios, Common Ground could then deploy its nine new tracks that do not stop browsing through shaggy formats. And what we hear and recognize first is the voice of David Longdon, from “The Strangest Times” which is heard like a solid title quite characteristic of the musical signature of Big Big Train. If the band’s sometimes rougher new sound (or rather its evolution) can be heared here and there, we find the usual delicacy on the exquisite “Headwaters” and some eighties influences with “Black with Ink”. But in the vein of elementary, concentrated progressive rock that goes beyond its limits, it is especially the second half of the album that will totally convince. With the instrumental “Apollo” which makes sparks but also the title track obviously, typical, and the bouncy fifteen minutes of “Atlantic Cable” inspired by the laying of a cable of 3000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean in the 19th century , when telegraphs were used to communicate in real time. The guests are there (including Carly Bryant) without drowning the title under a torrent of bombast. The orchestrations are rich, colorful. They help to give the new direction of Big Big Train not revolutionary accents, but a sufficiently demarcated continuity to keep this discreet balance that allows Common Ground to stay on the top.
