Glass Hammer – Skallagrim: Into the Breach

D/dropcap]écidément, on ne pourra pas qualifier Glass Hammer de groupe dilettant : cinq albums en à peine six ans ! Et les américains poursuivent sur leur lancée avec la suite des aventures de Skallagrim dont nous avions suivi les premiers pas avec Dreaming City (2020). Précisons pour les exégètes que l’inspiration provient de l’univers de l’héroïc fantasy que le groupe avait largement visité à ses débuts (Tolkien évidemment) avant de pousser le bassiste-compositeur Steve Babb à écrire un roman de quatre cent pages intitulé “Skallagrim – In The Vales Of Pagarna” dont la sortie est prévue en 2022. Alors voilà, le voleur Skallagrim a perdu la mémoire ainsi que la femme qu’il aime. Son seul allié reste une épée, mais pas n’importe laquelle. Direction la guerre ! Musicalement, la trajectoire du héros enfonce les clous de sonorités plus heavy, triture le barbelé et le ferrugineux. Avec la nouvelle chanteuse Hannah Pryor qui complète le solide trio SteveBabb, Fred Schendel et Aaron Raulston, l’album enchaîne les riffs (« Steel « , « Anthem To Andorath »), brode du Hammond « The Ogre Of Archon »), joue du Mellotron (« Sellsword »), des synthés (« Hyperborea ») sans jamais mettre le pied sur la pédale de frein hormis quelques passages plus apaisés qui offrent des respirations bienvenues (« A Spell Upon His Mind », « Moon Pool ») et des twists équilibristes (« In The Forlorn Hope »). Avec Skallagrim: Into The Breach nos amis de Glass Hammer s’éloignent un peu plus d’une influence Yes que les amateurs commençaient à trouver rédhibitoires, jouent à saute-moutons entre prog rock et métal tout en peaufinant une nouvelle fois leur storytelling autour d’arrangements raffinés et d’une production aux petits oignons dont on attend évidement la suite au prochain numéro. Glass Hammer can’t be called a dilettante band: five albums in only six years! And the Americans continue their momentum with the continuation of Skallagrim’s adventures, whose first steps we followed with Dreaming City (2020). Let’s specify for the exegetes that the inspiration comes from the universe of the heroic fantasy that the group had largely visited at its beginnings (Tolkien obviously) before pushing the bassist-composer Steve Babb to write a novel of four hundred pages entitled “Skallagrim – In The Vales Of Pagarna” whose release is planned in 2022. With the new singer Hannah Pryor who completes the solid trio SteveBabb, Fred Schendel and Aaron Raulston, the album connects the riffs (“Steel”, “Anthem To Andorath”), embroiders of Hammond (“The Ogre Of Archon”), plays of the Mellotron (“Sellsword”), synths (“Hyperborea”) without ever putting the foot on the brake pedal except for some calmer passages that offer welcome breaths (“A Spell Upon His Mind”, “Moon Pool”) and balanced twists (“In The Forlorn Hope”). With Skallagrim: Into The Breach our friends from Glass Hammer move away from a Yes influence that fans were beginning to find prohibitive, play leapfrog between prog rock and metal while refining once again their storytelling around refined arrangements and a production that we are obviously waiting for the next issue.
