Leprous – Aphelion

C’est avec la précision d’un métronome que Leprous s’en revient nous conter fleurette. Deux ans après la surprise Pitfalls qui avait de quoi renverser, revoici le falsetto plaintif de Einar Solberg pour un huitième album poursuivant dans la voie tracée. Des guitares aiguisées, des riffs carnassiers, des cordes en contre champ, un chant habité font de cet Aphelion un objet à la fois surprenant et attendu. S’il n’y a pas l’ombre d’un concept derrière ce titre énigmatique, le groupe norvégiens a poussé le vice jusqu’à enregistrer les chansons séparément, dans différents studios. Rien qui n’empêche une vraie cohérence sonique et le déploiement d’un solide talent mélodique. Dès « Running Low », la promesse est posée : un piano martelé et un chant comme échappé d’un brouillard épais. Une ambiance dramatique enveloppe peu à peu l’introduction et fait monter la tension avant que les décharges électriques prennent le relais, tout en retenue. Et puis le groove. Les variations font perdre le nord. C’est à la fois, simple, torturé, catchy, terriblement addictif. Et ce n’est pas le plus atmosphérique « Out of There » qui nous replacera au centre de l’échiquier. Avec un chant qui monte dans les tours au fil d’une composition qui ajoute de la matière brute au fil de l’histoire. Tendue. La suite évitera de trop revenir sur ses pas, poursuit sa route avec des accents parfois plus technos (« Silhouette »), des cordes enrobées, un piano subtile avant un refrain déchaîné en forme d’hymne (« All the Moments ») qui devrait cartonner sur scène. Si « Have You Ever? » pourra évoquer Archive et « On Hold » un certain Muse, le rythme funky de « The Silent Revelation » rebat les cartes pour donner aux amateurs de quoi se tripoter le chorus. Les amateurs de soli pourront trouver la formule un peu morne, même si « The Shadow Side » donne le change en grosses coupures avant que « Nighttime Disguise » n’achève les choses sur du growl un peu inutile mais que goûteront les puristes d’un métal chauffé à blanc. Conclusion brutale, définitive, jusqu’au-boutiste d’un album à la production impeccable qui met en avant les qualités instrumentales des musiciens tout en conservant constamment la voix de Solberg dans le viseur. Two years after the great Pitfalls, which was enough to stun, here comes Einar Solberg’s plaintive falsetto for an eighth album continuing in the same way. Fans of solos may find the formula a bit dull, even if “The Shadow Side” gives the change in big cuts before “Nighttime Disguise” finishes things off with a growl that’s a bit useless but that purists of a white-hot metal will appreciate. A brutal, definitive, to-the-point conclusion to an album with impeccable production that highlights the instrumental qualities of the musicians while constantly keeping Solberg’s voice in the spotlight.
