Bjørn Riis – Everything to Everyone

Pour son quatrième album solo, Bjørn Riis (guitariste et chanteur de la formation Airbag) s’est bien entouré : Henrik Bergan Fossum (Airbag), Kristian Hultgren (Wobbler), Simen Valldal Johannessen (Oak), Ole Michael Bjørndal (Caligonaut), Mimmi Tamba, Per Øydir, Vegard Kleftås Sleipnes et Anders Møller. Joli générique. Côté musique les six morceaux proposés se déploient sur une cinquantaine de minutes et démarre pied au plancher avec la rugueuse instrumentale « Run » qui donne le ton d’un album qui va s’amuser à sautiller sans vergogne entre ses hémisphères heavy et atmosphériques. Acoustique, électrique, planant ou tellurique. En équilibre. Même en plaçant le curseur entre ces deux pôles, Riis garde le cap d’une musique toujours passionnante, bardée de variations qui peuvent nous emmener sur des versants qui feront penser à Tim Bowness (« The Siren« ), Porcupine Tree (« Every Second Every Hour« ), Anathema et Pink Floyd bien entendu (« Lay Me Down« ), le tout sans jamais tomber du côté de la simple citation possédée. Notre ami sort assez de subtilités de son sac à malices pour naviguer dans son propre univers, aussi référentiel soit-il. En ressort un disque vaguement inspiré de l’Enfer de Dante mais sans accumulation glauque ou dépressive, voguant sur un spleen qui tient la barre. De la mélancolie bien placée, en fond de cale, qui donne de la chair, de la contenance au propos, aux ambiances et à tout un tas de petites choses qui nous éloignent de facto du tout venant. Et c’est l’instrumentale « Descending » qui prolonge le voyage vers une forme de post-rock à l’incandescence maitrisée avant que la chanson titre  « Everything to Everyone » ne conclue l’ensemble dans un duo vocal assuré avec Mimmi Tamba avant un solo typique de Riis qui ouvre la voie à un final qui déchire le voile finement tissé pour mieux nous retourner à grands coups de couteau dans la six cordes. Nous pouvons alors quitter le navire encore chancelant avec l’irrésistible envie d’y retourner.

For his fourth solo album, Bjørn Riis (guitarist and singer of the band Airbag) worked with Henrik Bergan Fossum (Airbag), Kristian Hultgren (Wobbler), Simen Valldal Johannessen (Oak), Ole Michael Bjørndal (Caligonaut), Mimmi Tamba, Per Øydir, Vegard Kleftås Sleipnes and Anders Møller. As for the music, the six tracks are spread over fifty minutes and start off with the rough instrumental « Run » which sets the tone for an album that will have fun jumping shamelessly between its heavy and atmospheric hemispheres. Acoustic, electric, soaring or telluric. In balance. Even by placing the cursor between these two poles, Riis keeps the course of a music always exciting, full of variations that can take us on sides that will make us think of Tim Bowness (« The Siren »), Porcupine Tree (« Every Second Every Hour »), Anathema and Pink Floyd of course (« Lay Me Down »), all without ever falling on the side of the simple quotation or too massive influences. The guitarist takes enough subtleties out of his bag of tricks to navigate in his own universe, as referential as it is. The result is a record vaguely inspired by Dante’s Inferno but without gloomy or depressive accumulation, sailing on a spleen which holds the helm. Melancholy well placed, in the bottom of the hold, which gives flesh, contentment to the subject, to the atmospheres and to a whole bunch of small things which move us away de facto from everything. And it’s the instrumental « Descending » that prolongs the trip towards a form of post-rock with mastered incandescence before the title track « Everything to Everyone » concludes the whole in a vocal duet with Mimmi Tamba before a typical guitar solo that opens the way to a final that tears the finely woven veil to better return us with great stabs in the six strings. We can then leave the ship still shaky with the irresistible desire to return.
