Tony Patterson & Doug Melbourne – Dark Before Dawn

De retour après The Divide en 2020, le duo Tony Patterson & Doug Melbourne (du tribute band ReGenesis) revient cette année avec Dark Before Dawn sans rien lâcher de leur excellence mélodique. En injectant de l’électronique à leurs compositions, nos amis ajoutent de la matière à des morceaux qui ne manquent déjà pas de relief. Epaulés par un autre acolyte de ReGenesis, Nigel Appleton, mais également la guitare de Steve Anderson (The Room, Grey Lady Down) et la Chapman stick de Carrie Melbourne (que nous avions pu apprécier sur le Tubular Bells III d’un certain Mike Oldfield), le duo déploie alors leurs titres soyeux, finement arrangés. Quelques échos jazzy (« Old School Tie »), d’autres plus rugueux (« Maybe »), donnent à l’ensemble assez de matière et d’épaisseur pour assoir un univers décidément très séduisant. Evidemment, les fondus de turpitudes égarées ou de voyages bringuebalants pourront être frustrés de suivre le cours d’un album varié mais jamais complètement hors des sentiers battus, quitte à donner le change (« Reach Out ») et à varier les ambiances (« Love ») et les tonalité nous faisant passer de chansons légères à des titres plus graves (« Stopping Time », « Leaving », « True Love ») influencé par la disparition de l’épouse de Tony Patterson. L’ultime titre « Come Home » accompagné au piano est ainsi dédié à Angela dans une ambiance simple, discrète, qui n’exsude jamais la tristesse ou la dépression. Un bel hommage qui vient conclure un très bel album qui souffle le chaud et le froid avec le même souci du travail bien fait.

Back after The Divide in 2020, the duo Tony Patterson & Doug Melbourne (from the tribute band ReGenesis) returns this year with Dark Before Dawn without letting go of their melodic excellence. By injecting electronics into their compositions, our friends add material to tracks that are already not lacking in relief. Supported by another acolyte of ReGenesis, Nigel Appleton, but also the guitar of Steve Anderson (The Room, Gray Lady Down) and the Chapman stick of Carrie Melbourne (which we had been able to appreciate on the Tubular Bells III of a certain Mike Oldfield ), the duo then deploys their silky, finely arranged titles. Some jazzy echoes (“Old School Tie”), others rougher (“Maybe”), give the whole enough substance and thickness to establish a decidedly very seductive universe. Obviously, fans of misguided turpitude or rickety journeys may be frustrated to follow the course of an album that is varied but never completely off the beaten track, even if it means giving the change (“Reach Out”) and varying the atmospheres (“Love ) and the tones taking us from light songs to more serious titles (“Stopping Time”, “Leaving”, “True Love”) influenced by the disappearance of Tony Patterson’s wife. The final title “Come Home” accompanied by the piano is thus dedicated to Angela in a simple, discreet atmosphere, which never exudes sadness or depression. A beautiful tribute that comes to conclude a very beautiful album that blows hot and cold with the same concern for a job well done.
