Mikael Åkerfeldt – Clark

Clark est une minisérie estampillée Netflix sortie au printemps et basé sur la vie du braqueur Clark Olofsson (interprété par Bill Skarsgard, fils de Stellan et frère d’Alexander) qui donnera naissance au concept de “Syndrôme de Stockholm”. Pour envelopper ces six épisodes, les producteurs (Börje Hansson & Julia Stannard) et le réalisateur (Jonas Åkerlund) se sont rapprochés de Mikael Akerfeldt, leader du groupe Opeth, ce qui pourra sembler un choix étonnant eu égard au pédigré de ce dernier. Pourtant la bande originale ne se fait jamais dans le décalage des genres et repose sur 34 titres (dont quatre chantés par Akerfeldt avec en haut de la pile l’excellent “Lost in San Marino”) pour près d’une heure vingt de musique. Ce découpage permet de sautiller à travers les époques, allant du swing des années 60 au psychédélisme des années 70, en passant par le jazz (“Rockefellers”, “Here’s That Sunny Day”), le funk groovy (“Druglord Panic”), le tango (“Tango Bizarre”), la valse (“Then”) et même quelques influences orientales (“La Shay’ Jadid Taht Alshams”). En écoutant s’égrainer les morceaux, il ne fait aucun doute que le musicien s’est amusé à piocher dans tout son historique musical.

« Écrire la musique de ‘Clark’ est probablement l’une des choses les plus gratifiantes que j’ai faites musicalement […] J’ai dû développer un son spécifique… tout était dans ma tête, je suppose, mais j’ai eu l’impression d’être sur quelque chose après avoir terminé le premier morceau. Les retours de Jonas furent presque trop positifs et j’ai pu continuer à partir de là.”

Composé pendant la pandémie, le résultat est à la hauteur et on se prendra à planer du côté de Pink Floyd (“Wish You Were There”, “Ordinary Folks”) ou de Black Sabbath (“Måndag i Stockholm”) tout en appréciant la diversité de l’ensemble allant bien au-delà de simples hommages pour lui donner toute la texture nécessaire. Avec sa production aux petits oignons, ses mélanges d’acoustique (“Sunrise”), d’électrique, d’orchestral (“Ode to Confusion in A Minor”), de cordes (“Ballad Of The Libertine In G Minor”), d’atmosphères débridées (“Hapiness”, “Funky Chicken”, “Rhodes Rat”, “Red & White” particulièrement seventies), de tension suspendue (“The Hunted Are in the Clear”) et de rock clinquant (“Battle for Love”, “Night Life”), cette BO, malgré la frustration de n’avoir que des formats courts, nous embarque dans un voyage temporel euphorique se suffisant à lui-même.

Clark is a Netflix miniseries released in the spring and based on the life of the bank robber Clark Olofsson (played by Bill Skarsgard, son of Stellan and brother of Alexander) which will give birth to the concept of « Stockholm Syndrome ». To wrap these six episodes, the producers (Börje Hansson & Julia Stannard) and the director (Jonas Åkerlund) have approached Mikael Akerfeldt, leader of the band Opeth, which may seem a surprising choice considering the latter’s pedigree. However, the soundtrack is never out of sync with the genres and is based on 34 tracks (four of which are sung by Akerfeldt, with the excellent « Lost in San Marino » at the top of the list) for almost an hour and twenty minutes of music. This breakdown allows us to hop through the eras, from the swing of the 60s to the psychedelia of the 70s, through jazz (« Rockefellers », « Here’s That Sunny Day »), groovy funk (« Druglord Panic »), tango (« Tango Bizarre »), waltz (« Then ») and even some oriental influences (« La Shay’ Jadid Taht Alshams »). Listening to the tracks, there is no doubt that the musician has had a lot of fun with his musical history. Composed during the pandemic, the result is up to the task and one will find oneself hovering on the side of Pink Floyd (« Wish You Were There », « Ordinary Folks ») or Black Sabbath (« Måndag i Stockholm ») while appreciating the diversity of the whole, going far beyond simple homages to give it all the best texture. With its meticulous production, its mix of acoustic (« Sunrise »), electric, orchestral (« Ode to Confusion in A Minor »), strings (« Ballad Of The Libertine In G Minor »), unbridled atmospheres (« Hapiness », « Funky Chicken », « Rhodes Rat », « Red & White » particularly seventies), suspended tension (« The Hunted Are in the Clear ») and flashy rock (« Battle for Love », « Night Life »), this soundtrack, despite the frustration of having only short tracks, takes us on a euphoric time trip that is sufficient in itself.
