Esthesis – Watching Worlds Collide

Avouons-le : le monde du prog-rock hexagonal reste un entre soi d’où ressortent quelques dinosaures encore au taquet et des animaux bien vivaces qui poursuivent le chemin tracé par les premiers cités. Parmi ces petits jeunes qui n’en veulent, Esthesis avait déboulé avec l’EP prometteur Raising Hands (2019) avant de confirmer avec The Awakening (2020). Sur leur lancée, Aurélien Goude et sa bande reviennent avec Watching Worlds Collide, un nouvel opus qui prolonge leurs premiers pas en poussant les potards de plusieurs crans. Si l’influence de Porcupine Tree (période In Absentia – Deadwing – Fear of the Blank Planet) est toujours manifeste, il ne bouffe jamais les compositions au point de digérer le groupe comme un nouvel ersatz. Dès « Amber » et la rythmique serpentine de Marc Anguill et Arnaud Nicolau, sa production solide et ses reflets jazzy, les influences se mélangent sans jamais se fracasser, avec un naturel immédiat qui impose derechef les transitions entre atmosphères au groove impeccable, des riffs tranchants et un solo de saxophone bien calé (« Place Your Bets« ). En parvenant à changer les ambiances sur « Skimming Stones » qui nous rapproche de The Pineapple Thief et Anathema par les envolées de violon mélancolique, Esthesis s’amuse avec toutes les nuances du spectre. Et toujours cette faculté à passer d’une ligne mélodique où coule le cool à des déflagrations rugissantes nappées de breaks de cuivres et de banjo (« Wandering Cloud« ), de triturations jazz instrumentales réjouissantes (« Vertigo« ) jusqu’aux échos de Pink Floyd sur la douzaine de minutes cinématiques de « 57th Street » qui nous plongent dans une atmosphère entre rêve et réalité avec la voix de Mathilde Collet pour faire bonne mesure. La besace est déjà bien garnie quand arrive « Through My Lens » qui explose littéralement le compteur avec le solo de Baptiste Desmares qui zieute du côté d’Airbag, RPWL et Gazpacho. Comme sur le reste de l’album, ces références ne pèsent jamais trop lourd sur la musique de Esthesis qui s’attache aux variations subtiles autour d’un genre qui ne demande qu’à se réinventer. En ce sens, Watching Worlds Collide ne bouleverse pas la donne mais pose un jalon enthousiasmant qui se suffit à lui-même. La réussite de cet album remarquable est là et c’est une très bonne nouvelle !

let’s face it: the world of hexagonal prog-rock remains one between itself from which emerge a few dinosaurs still on the job and very lively animals which continue the path traced by the first mentionned. Among these young people, Esthesis had tumbled with the promising EP Raising Hands (2019) before confirming with The Awakening (2020). On their way, Aurélien Goude and his band are back with Watching Worlds Collide, a new opus that extends their first steps by pushing the knobs up several notches. If the influence of Porcupine Tree (In Absentia – Deadwing – Fear of the Blank Planet) is still evident, he never eats the compositions to the point of digesting the group as a new ersatz. From « Amber » and the serpentine rhythm of Marc Anguill and Arnaud Nicolau, its solid production and its jazzy reflections, the influences mix without ever crashing, with an immediate naturalness which once again imposes transitions between atmospheres with impeccable groove, sharp riffs and a well-tuned saxophone solo (« Place Your Bets »). By managing to change the atmospheres on « Skimming Stones » which brings us closer to The Pineapple Thief and Anathema by the flights of melancholic violin, Esthesis has fun with all the nuances of the spectrum. And always this ability to move from a melodic line where the cool flows to roaring explosions topped with brass and banjo breaks (« Wandering Cloud »), joyful instrumental jazz triturations (« Vertigo ») to the echoes of Pink Floyd on the dozen cinematic minutes of « 57th Street » which plunge us into an atmosphere between dream and reality with the voice of Mathilde Collet for good measure. The bag is already well stocked when « Through My Lens » arrives, which literally explodes the counter with the solo of Baptiste Desmares who zieute on the side of Airbag, RPWL and Gazpacho. As on the rest of the album, these references never weigh too heavily on Esthesis’ music, which focuses on subtle variations around a genre that is just waiting to reinvent itself. In this sense, Watching Worlds Collide does not disrupt the situation but sets an exciting milestone that is sufficient in itself. The achievement of this remarkable album is here and that is very good news!
