Red Dead Redemption 2 Soundtrack

Dans la série bande originales de jeux vidéo qui dépotent, Red Dead Redemption 2 se pose là, pas loin de son prédécesseur, avec un sacré répondant. Il faut dire que le jeu de Rockstar s’est adjugé un pannel d’artistes pas piqué des hannetons avec, notamment, le multi-instrumentiste D’Angelo, mais aussi Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), Rhiannon Giddens, Rocco de Luca, Matthew Sweeney (Dixie Chicks, Neil Diamond, Adele), Willie Nelson, Woody Jackson et Daniel Lanois collaborateur émérite de U2, Bob Dylan, Brian Eno et même du Peter Gabriel période So. Autant dire que la barque est plutôt bien chargée et le résultat de cette compilation peut donc aller piocher tranquillement dans une collection sonore de plus de sept heures ! En ressortent treize titres seulement pour moins de trois quart d’heure qui nous offrent, certes une bonne perspective du paysage sonique présent tout au long du jeu, mais qui pourra s’avérer frustrants par l’absence de nombreux moments forts. Aux dernières nouvelles, un second album pourrait sortir avec des titres signés de Woody Jackson… alors restons patients.

Entre roots country (« Cruel World ») et pop rock orchestral, voire post-rock (« Mountain Finale »), la texture musicale distille banjo, harmonica, fiddle, violoncelle, violon, guitares acoustiques et électriques. Avec une bande originale assez éloignée d’un premier épisode qui naviguait dans l’esprit des westerns spaghetti habités par Ennio Morricone, Red Dead Redemption 2 est, selon les producteurs, influencé par l’album Teatro de Willie Nelson (produit par Daniel Lanois, 1998) mais aussi la BO de The Hired Hand de Peter Fonda (1971) et le groupe Wrecking Crew qui accompagnèrent aussi bien Frank Sinatra que Brian Wilson. Pour faire bonne mesure, s’ajoutera à la liste le Neil Young du film Dead Man de Jim Jarmush (« Love Come Back ») histoire d’offrir à cette bande originale le carcan adéquat pour une belle ballade au temps du western.

In the collection of great videogames’s soundtracks, Red Dead Redemption 2 rules, not far from its predecessor. For the best, Rockstar game has convocated a panel of great artists like the multi-instrumentalist D’Angelo, but also Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), Rhiannon Giddens, Rocco de Luca, Matthew Sweeney (Dixie Chicks, Neil Diamond, Adele), Willie Nelson, Woody Jackson and Daniel Lanois collaborator of U2, Bob Dylan, Brian Eno and Peter Gabriel for the masterpiece “So“. In other words, the album is rather well loaded and the result of this compilation can therefore go and quietly dig into a sound collection of more than seven hours – due to a duration game of 60 hours! Thirteen tracks emerge from it for less than three quarters of an hour, offering us a good perspective of the sonic landscape present throughout the game, but which could prove frustrating due to the absence of many highlights. A second album could be released during summer with mostly Woody Jackson tunes, so let’s be patient!

With a soundtrack that is far removed from a first episode that sailed in the spirit of the spaghetti westerns inhabited by Ennio Morricone, Red Dead Redemption 2 is, according to the producers, influenced by Willie Nelson‘s Teatro album (produced by Daniel Lanois, 1998) but also Peter Fonda‘s The Hired Hand soundtrack (1971) and the Wrecking Crew group that accompanied both Frank Sinatra and Brian Wilson. For good measure, the Neil Young from Jim Jarmush‘s Dead Man (“Love Come Back“) will be added to the list to give this soundtrack the perfect ride in the time of the western.
