Trail of the Dead – Bleed Here Now

Comme pour mieux marquer les choses, … And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead (raccourci en Trail of the Dead) aura vu double pour son onzième album subtilement intitulé Bleed Here Now. Un double serré puisque le terrain de jeu dépasse à peine des 90 minutes pour 22 morceaux au cordeau. Il faut dire que la bande de Conrad Kelly et Jason Reece (les deux historiques) ne s’embarrasse que rarement de longues envolées ou de moments atmosphériques qui feraient baisser la tension. Bleed Here Now ne fait pas dans la dentelle, certes, mais parvient à calibrer ses mélodies pour offrir de quoi passer un très bon moment. Après la déconvenue de X: The Godless Void and Other Stories, sorti en 2020 et juste avant la pandémie, ce qui empêcha toute promo et tournée de rigueur, le groupe se sera immédiatement remis à l’ouvrage. Sans déroger à leur principe de construire avant tout des mélodies solides qui font mouche, TOD avance en terrain connu, balisé, mais d’une redoutable efficacité avec la présence également de Amanda Palmer et Britt Daniel (Spoon) sur ”Growing Divide”. Mais c’est évidemment sur les qualités mélodiques que tout se joue. Un joli sens de l’à-propos, TOD trousse un chapelet de chansons qui s’enchaînent sans longueur ni langueur, d’une introduction (”Our Epic Attemps”) qui claque aux interludes instrumentaux bienvenus (”Pigments”, ”Sting Theme”,  ”Life Less Melancholy”, ”Darkness into Light”) en passant par des titres qui pourraient sembler anarchiques (”Long Distance Hell”) quand d’autres font immédiatement taper dans les mains (”Water Tower”, ”Field Songs”, ”Contra Mundum”), se balader sur fond acoustique (”Growing Divide”) ou cracher du gros son (”Kill Everyone”, ”No Confidence”, ”Penny Candle”). Les influences virevoltes allant des Beatles (”English Magic”) à Archive (”Golden Sail”) en passant par les Counting Crows ou The Polyphonic Spree (”Salt in Your Eyes”). De quoi faire dire aux plus frileux que tout cela manque de cohérence. Pourtant, c’est bien la capacité à fureter ici et là qui fait la force d’un groupe qui vise souvent juste et qui donne à ce Bleed Here Now la capacité, rare pour les doubles albums, de surprendre d’un bout à l’autre. Rien qui ne réinvente les choses mais suffisamment pour tenir debout une heure et demie.

As if to better mark the occasion, … And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead (shortened to Trail of the Dead) will have seen double for its eleventh album subtly entitled Bleed Here Now. A tight double, since the playing field barely exceeds 90 minutes for 22 tracks. It must be said that the band of Conrad Kelly and Jason Reece (the two historical ones) rarely embarrasses themselves with long flights of fancy or atmospheric moments that would lower the tension. Bleed Here Now doesn’t do anything fancy, of course, but manages to calibrate its melodies to offer a very good time. After the disappointment of X: The Godless Void and Other Stories, released in 2020 and just before the pandemic, which prevented any promotion and touring, the band immediately got back to work. Without deviating from their principle of building solid melodies that hit the bull’s eye, TOD advances on familiar ground, marked out, but with a formidable efficiency with the presence also of Amanda Palmer and Britt Daniel (Spoon) on « Growing Divide ». But it’s obviously on the melodic qualities that everything is at stake. With a nice sense of timing, TOD put together a string of songs that follow one another without length or languor, from a slamming introduction (« Our Epic Attemps ») to welcome instrumental interludes (« Pigments », « Sting Theme », « Life Less Melancholy », « Darkness into Light ») and tracks that might seem anarchic (« Long Distance Hell ») while others make you clap your hands (« Water Tower », « Field Songs », « Contra Mundum »), walk around on an acoustic background (« Growing Divide ») or spit out some big sound (« Kill Everyone », « No Confidence », « Penny Candle »). The influences range from the Beatles (« English Magic ») to Archive (« Golden Sail »), via the Counting Crows or The Polyphonic Spree (« Salt in Your Eyes »). This is enough to make the most reluctant say that all this lacks coherence. However, it’s the ability to poke around here and there that makes the strength of a band that often aims right and gives this Bleed Here Now the capacity, rare for double albums, to surprise from one end to the other. Nothing that reinvents things, but enough to last an hour and a half.
