L'Échange
4.0TOP 2008

CHANGELING

Changeling is an imbroglio movie. In the first place because of a project planned for Ron Howard it failed in the hands of a radically different kind of director Clint Eastwood. Then because he left empty-handed from the 2008 Cannes Film Festival when the jury chaired by Sean Penn (Academy Awards winner two years earlier for Mystic River) did not want to award him the Palme d’Or, preferring to invent a prize that Eastwood will not come to take in the end, preferring a local “bouillabaisse“. In fact, if the film remains a very high-level Hollywood work, impeccably crafted, with its magnificent reconstruction of the 1930s, its splendid photography (Tom Stern once again) and its flawless interpretation (Angelina Jolie, John Malkovitch at the head), the classicism of the whole could logically slow down the ardor of the most modernists. However, by filming this story so improbable that some critics saw it as an example of manipulative narrative exaggeration, this trajectory towards the horror of a courageous mother whose child was preferred to be replaced rather than confessed to her disappearance, Eastwood dares a once again plunge the viewer into the most sepulchral darkness. By explaining the contemporary world in the shadow of a past that America struggles to face in the face, the director paints this tragedy with absolute power and sincerity as evidenced by the score, both discreet and jazzy that he composed. Without adding to the pathos. And if he lets himself go a few lengths, his staging remains very effective. On the line. Cry of anger at an inhuman administration in the tradition of its libertarian inclinations, the intimate melodrama mixes with the thriller with admirable fluidity. The prerogative of the great masters.
