Jersey Boys
3.3Note Finale

ENGLISH VERSION

JERSEY BOYS

It must be said from the outset, Jersey Boys is a flawless, gleaming film, a little bit futile like a champagne bubble. By immersing us in the story of these four buddies who founded the Four Seasons, a mythical band from the 60s, vintage shimmers and gives the film its retro-naphthalmic side reinforced by a direction that only too rarely departs from the original musical. The main reason for this perhaps too faithful adaptation also comes from a script adapted by the original authors, Rick Elice and above all Marshall Brickman, a renowned screenwriter who had collaborated on several Woody Allen films, including Annie Hall and Manhattan. Although Jon Favreau (Iron Man, The Mandalorian) was initially the director designed by Warner Bros., he quickly abandoned the project before it fell into the hands of Clint Eastwood who returned behind the camera three years after J. Edgar. An eternity for the filmmaker, accustomed to a quasi-annual filming rhythm. So, the actors in the film are the same as on the Broadway scene, which gives the whole thing a unity and coherence that sets the musical numbers to a (too) well-tuned tempo. A gentle nostalgia emerges. The happiness, also, to find Christopher Walken in a decent, dancing role, and this always sinuous way, of the director, not really dealing with his subject. Indeed, Clint Eastwood prefers to lean on the mourning and regret, the sense of sacrifice and the bitter melancholy that drapes his characters. This way of digging into the raw material gives the film just enough relief to escape the usual clichés and its programmatic monotony. Not necessarily convincing either, since it will be another public and above all critical failure.
