ENGLISH VERSION

MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL

A timeless and out of fashion Polar, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is John Lee Hancock’s (A Perfect World) adaptation of a novel by John Berendt about real events in Savannah, Georgia, in 1980. The film is a bit of a disguise of reality, setting the action in December instead of May. Art collector Jim Williams (Kevin Spacey) gives a Christmas Eve reception in the presence of journalist John Kelso (John Cusack impeccably replaced Edward Norton, who declined the role) and a few hand-picked guests. During this evening, Williams will kill his lover Billy (Jude Law) before pleading self-defense. Between the living and the dead, on the edge of good and evil, in a folkloric south where the remnants of the Civil War still float on its soil of supernatural beliefs, the film seems to be driven by its own fascination. On a slow (2h35) and hypnotic rhythm, Clint Eastwood takes us from picaresque places to picturesque characters (the man walking his invisible dog, Lady Chablis in her own role) and offers us some offbeat scenes sot so far away from Jacques Tati. Lulled by the ghost of Johnny Mercer, this incredible story that had fascinated America will not seduce the general public. The leitmotiv of this meditative film is a profession of faith: “To understand the living, we must commune with the dead“. A confession by Clint Eastwood on a part of his past (Pale Rider, The High Plains Drifter, Bird, White Hunter Black Heart) and on his future production which was going to dig deeper and deeper into this deadly mood.
