ENGLISH VERSION

A PERFECT WORLD

It is a sinuous path that this (great) film originally proposed to Steven Spielberg before falling into the hands of Clint Eastwood. While the filmmaker first thinks of Denzel Washington, it is finally Kevin Costner, still fresh from the success of Dances with Wolves and his string of Oscars, who is chosen to play Butch, a prisoner who will attempt to escape alongside his young hostage Philip (T.J. Lowther). An initiatory road movie, thriller, intimate drama, A Perfect World is set during the Halloween festivities in the Dallas area, just before John F. Kennedy‘s fatal visit, as a symbol of a national identity ready to be shattered. Shot under tension, Kevin Costner finds here his most beautiful role, at once endearing, violent, unpredictable. The lost child may not be the one we think he is. Throughout the film, Clint Eastwood takes his time, dwells on the relationship between the runaway and this child who learns another life, another way of looking at things. The filmmaker alternates luminous and tragic sequences. He introduces a poetry that seems to have escaped from Rimbaud‘s “Le Dormeur du Val“. From this desperate race there is a glimmer of hope with the transmission of a heritage, a freedom, always at the heart of the Eastwood works. In this wild outfit, T.J. Lowther has nothin of the gifted annoying, the kid who makes tons of them. Shut in, he plays with looks, gestures and silences as if Philip wanted to preserve himself from the outside world at all costs. On the other side of the road, Red Garnett offers Clint Eastwood the role of a Ranger uncertain of his choices in the face of a world more complex than the simple illusory frontier between good and evil. The same simplistic vision that America was about to abandon in pain. And like his country, he will have to face the consequences of his actions, of his decisions. No matter how tragic. When the small story meets the big, the result is a film of raw strength, of total emotion. The unseemly scene with the farmer and his abused son is the most touching and disturbing example of this, between love and madness, compassion and punishment. An intense, immense movie, double complementary and as high ranked as the previous Unforgiven with which it forms an atypical diptych, A Perfect World will be shunned by the American public and unfairly considered a commercial failure despite its very successful international career. Let’s stay down to earth, there remains, in any case, an absolutely magnificent and moving work.
