Chasseur Blanc, Cœur Noir
3.8Note Finale

Wake me up if we crash into the mountain. I wouldn’t want to miss that. (John Wilson)

ENGLISH VERSION

WHITE HUNTER, BLACK HEART

In addition to John Huston‘s “classic” themes and style, Clint Eastwood‘s admiration for his elder has always been essential to his own cinema. Nevertheless, at the beginning of the 90s, White hunter, Black Heart surprised everyone, starting with Warner, who, after several successive failures, remained extremely cautious about the idea of embarking on this story. Always pragmatic and following the logic that has driven him since his beginnings behind the camera, Eastwood then accepted in return for funding, the project of The Rookie, a buddy movie in the vein of Lethal Weapon. At the age of sixty and for his fourteenth feature film, Eastwood embarked on the astonishing and risky adventure of a slightly autobiographical biopic, about the mischief of John (Huston) Wilson during the shooting of the mythical African Queen, who, for the record, was arguing with Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn between Tanzania and Kenya.

Wake me up if we crash into the mountain. I wouldn’t want to miss that. (John Wilson)

Based on the eponymous book by Peter Viertel (screenwriter of the original film), the director composes the portrait of an artist who prefers life to entertainment, obsessed with the very idea of killing an elephant. A paradoxical man closer to his rifle than to his camera. If Clint‘s English accent can make you smile, White hunter, Black Heart digs deep into the image of both the filmmaker and the actor. His view of John Huston, who disappeared three years earlier, is treated as a disguised and uncompromising self-portrait. We then navigate between the obsessions of the man, the artist, his entrenched positions and his intransigence. The tragic outcome of the aborted hunt even sounds like the symbol of madness, of a demiurge will on creation, while revealing it a little more in the darkness of an ambiguous morality. Presented at Cannes Film Festival, this film, then atypical in Eastwood‘s work, will of course leave empty-handed as it never meets the implicit criteria of a film with a price tag, but it will allow the filmmaker to shed a little more light on his career.
