ENGLISH VERSION
In the post-rock category (with a big Radiohead influence) that arises here, the return of the duo behind North Atlantic Oscillation was in itself good news. Five years after Grind Show, here is the fifth album United Wire and the least we can say is that our friends have not lost their touch. Nor the ears. The opening title, « Clock », places us once again in the middle of a host of sounds that strike just surrounded by muffled bass and corrosive percussion. It’s a party for the sequencers, some will advance. This is also the rule of the game. The expected specifications. But the case is well enough organized not to give the illusion of a putative AI experience. The contribution of the machine takes on its full meaning here in a sort of singular sonic continuum. Man and machine in a formula that manages to get enough on board so as not to lose its (optical) nerve. The break between the tempestuous “Corridor” and the cool “Glyph” is there to defuse the bomb. In its electro melancholy, the title gradually evolves around a sinuous guitar to end in a form of controlled din. An ideal introduction for the album’s flagship track, « Matryoshka » which reverses the formula starting with a sustained rhythm, distorted vocals to the point of anxiety and a rain of sound before ending on an oasis of tranquility . Certainly, Ben Martin and Sam Healy know that tinkering with sounds and atmospheres would not be enough to captivate at a high level. They have not forgotten it. Venomous compositions infiltrate space-time. Those who resist will quickly give up, running out of frank melodies or out of survival instinct. A choice. The others will continue the experiment. From « Coil » to the frontal « Torch » where energy pulses: « I’m a body in the beam/Star, camera/I’m the glass, not the screen » (I’m a body in the beam/Star, camera/I’m the glass, not the screen) sings Healy as a profession of faith. The rest will never contradict him between the bravura piece « Cage » and its eight minutes between syncopated rhythms, vaporous textures and electro which initiate the delicacy of « Powder », slow languorous descent which will delight lovers of ethereal journey. Make no mistake, United Wire is an album rich in sensory experiences. North Atlantic Oscillation never caresses in the direction of the grain, except to raise eyebrows about what happens next. Moving from deceptive angelism to gut-wrenching dissonances, the duo has fun merging genres and technologies. And it works.
