Unitopia – Seven Chambers

L’affaire était entendue. Entre Mark Trueack et Sean Timms, les jeux étaient faits et plus rien n’allait. Fin de l’histoire. Le premier partit créer United Progressive Fraternity, l’autre Damanek. Deux projets qui dépotent. Mais voici que plus de douze ans après Artificial (2010), les voici de retour, enfin, avec un cinquième album. Seven Chambers est un double album, plutôt court pour ce format (à peine plus de 82 minutes) que tout amateurs de prog rock symphonique devrait visiter à un moment ou à un autre tant il fait étalage de son savoir-faire dans le genre. Épaulé par Steve Unruh (Resistor, UPF), John Greenwood, Chester Thompson (Genesis, Weather Report) et Alphonso Johnson (Santana, David Gilmour), les deux zigotos australiens balancent de l’acoustique, du heavy metal, du jazz, funk, symphonique, flamenco, world music et plus si affinités au fil d’une poignée de titres qui parleront aux amateurs de titres charnus mais pas trop (« Broken Heart« , « Bittersweet« , « The Stroke of Midnight« ) et aux exégètes de la suite à tiroir modèle buffet campagnard avec « Helen » et « The Uncertain » qui frôlent chacun la vingtaine de minutes au garrot. La recette est connue mais la réalisation est au cordeau. Changements de rythmes, de ton, virtuosité des musiciens, l’affaire est dans le sac. Que ce soit sur ses versants les plus tranquilles (« The Stroke of Midnight« ) ou résolument carabiné (« The Uncertain« ) avec ses riffs au barbelé qui tourneboulent à la régalade, Unitopia ne fait pas franchement les choses à moitié. Tout un programme. C’est ici qu’Unitopia s’affirme une nouvelle fois comme un peu plus qu’une valeur sûre dans le monde du prog rock, un groupe doué d’une générosité qui donne sans compter, sans calcul, et qui performe en dehors de toute démonstration sans âme. Si tout cela ne relève pas d’une originalité folle, il faut reconnaître que tout s’emboîte avec cette évidence chère aux excellents albums.

The matter was settled. Between Mark Trueack and Sean Timms, the game was over and nothing was going right. End of the story. The first left to create United Progressive Fraternity, the other Damanek. Two projects that rock. But now, more than twelve years after Artificial (2010), they are back, finally, with a fifth album. Seven Chambers is a double album, rather short for this format (barely more than 82 minutes) that all fans of symphonic prog rock should visit at one time or another as it displays its expertise in the genre. Supported by Steve Unruh (Resistor, UPF), John Greenwood, Chester Thompson (Genesis, Weather Report) and Alphonso Johnson (Santana, David Gilmour), the two Australian zigotos rock acoustic, heavy metal, jazz, funk, symphonic, flamenco, world music and more so affinities over the course of a handful of titles which will speak to lovers of meaty titles but not too much (« Broken Heart », « Bittersweet », « The Stroke of Midnight ») and to exegetes of the suite with a country buffet model drawer with “Helen” and “The Uncertain” which each come close to twenty minutes at a time. The recipe is known but the execution is tight. Changes in rhythm, tone, virtuosity of the musicians, the deal is in the bag. Whether on its quieter sides (« The Stroke of Midnight ») or resolutely fierce (« The Uncertain ») with its barbed wire riffs that spin wildly, Unitopia doesn’t really do things by halves. An entire program. It is here that Unitopia once again asserts itself as a little more than a sure bet in the world of prog rock, a group gifted with a generosity which gives without counting, without calculation, and which performs outside of any soulless demonstration. If all this is not crazy original, it must be recognized that everything fits together with this obviousness dear to excellent albums.
