God is an Astronaut – Ghost Tapes #10

Dans la constellation post-rock, les Irlandais de God is an Astronaut restent un des piliers du genre depuis une vingtaine d’années maintenant. Avec leur dixième album intitulé Ghost Tapes #10, rien de devrait véritablement bouger tant celui-ci reprend les mêmes routes escarpées si ce ne sont quelques cloches et flutiaux qui ne viendront pas bouleverser l’équation d’un genre qui semble contraint à répéter sa recette ad nauseam, à quelques exceptions près (jetez une oreille ou deux sur Long Distance Calling pour vous convaincre). Ceci dit, travailler les clichés peut s’avérer payant mais pour se dégager du tout-venant, encore faut-il épicer les choses ou ne pas hésiter à tordre ces développements soniques que beaucoup trouveront répétitifs. Plutôt inégal, l’album parvient à proposer de belles effluves (les grondements de “Burial“, les dissonances de “Adrift“, les déflagrations de “In Flux“) au milieu de compositions plus passe-partout, qui recyclent les développements vaporeux, éthérés et atmosphériques écrasés par des explosions telluriques dans la veine de ce qu’ils ont pu produire auparavant (All Is Violent, All Is Bright en 2005, Helios / Erebus en 2015, Epitaph en 2018) sans véritablement se démarquer ni pousser les choses plus loin. Ces trente-sept minutes ne sont pas véritablement un faux-pas dans la discographie du groupe, l’ensemble reste agréable et fidèle à l’univers sonore du quatuor, mais l’impression de surplace se fait assez ressentir pour ne pas éviter une certaine frustration qui pourrait à l’avenir enchaîner avec une petit ennui poli.

In the post-rock constellation, the Irishmen of God is an Astronaut have remained one of the pillars of the genre for twenty years now. With their tenth album entitled Ghost Tapes #10, nothing should really change as it takes the same steep roads, except for a few bells and whistles that won’t upset the equation of a genre that seems forced to repeat its recipe ad nauseam, with a few exceptions (take a listen or two to Long Distance Calling to convince yourself). Having said that, working on clichés can pay off, but to get away from the usual, you have to spice things up or not hesitate to twist these sonic developments that many will find repetitive. Rather uneven, the album manages to offer some beautiful effluvia (the rumblings of “Burial”, the dissonances of “Adrift”, the deflagrations of “In Flux”) in the middle of more generic compositions, which recycle the vaporous developments, ethereal and atmospheric developments crushed by telluric explosions in the vein of what they could produce before (All Is Violent, All Is Bright in 2005, Helios / Erebus in 2015, Epitaph in 2018) without really standing out or pushing things further. These thirty-seven minutes are not really a faux-pas in the band’s discography, the whole remains pleasant and faithful to the sound universe of the quartet, but the impression of standing still is felt enough not to avoid a certain frustration that could in the future lead to a small & polite boredom.
