Monstereo – In the Hollow of a Wave

Originaire de Bergen en Norvège, Monstereo est un de ces groupes de l’écurie Karisma passé sous nos radars l’an passé qui mérite pourtant qu’on y laisse trainer les esgourdes. Sept ans après Bright Star, le quatuor revient avec ses influences détonantes de hard-rock seventies et même eighties. In the Hollow of a Wave (c’est le nom de la bestiole) balance ainsi huit titres sans relâcher l’accélérateur ou presque. Le groove est constant dès ”Third Eye Seing” et s’appliquera à ne rien oublier, même dans ses atmosphères les plus sombres (”Jigsaw”). Tout est bien calé. Mais la pièce maîtresse reste le titre ”Wings” découpé en trois parties (pour un total de plus de 18 minutes) dont la dernière, la plus longue, nous attrape par le col pour nous embarquer quarante ans en arrière, à coup de claviers et de rythmique imparable : Jørgen Stangeland Bach et Jon Bolstad offrent ainsi une fondation ultra solide permettant aux guitares de Øyvind Aase Fluge de faire le boulot et à la voix Ola Utaaker Segadal de faire le minimum pour construire un album qui ne révolutionne pas le genre mais qui donne de quoi taper du pied. Monstereo livre ici un bel exercice de style, plein d’énergie positive, bien écrit et bien fichu. Largement suffisant pour en faire une belle découverte.

Hailing from Bergen in Norway, Monstereo is one of those bands from the Karisma stable that passed under our radar last year, but which still deserves to be heard. Seven years after Bright Star, the quartet is back with its explosive influences of seventies and even eighties hard-rock. In the Hollow of a Wave (that’s the name of the beast) throws eight tracks without letting go of the accelerator. The groove is constant from « Third Eye Seing » onwards, and it will not forget anything, even in its darkest atmospheres (« Jigsaw »). Everything is well set. But the masterpiece remains the title « Wings » cut in three parts (for a total of more than 18 minutes) of which the last one, the longest, grabs us by the collar to take us forty years back in time, with keyboards and unstoppable rhythmics: Jørgen Stangeland Bach and Jon Bolstad thus offer an ultra solid foundation allowing Øyvind Aase Fluge’s guitars to do the job and Ola Utaaker Segadal’s voice to do the minimum to build an album that doesn’t revolutionize the genre but that gives you something to tap your feet to. Monstereo delivers here a nice exercise of style, full of positive energy, well written and well done. It’s more than enough to make it a nice discovery.
