Santana – Blessings and Miracles

A/dropcap]près un IV (2016) particulièrement revigorant (et un Africa Speaks un peu à part), Santana revient avec un vingt-quatrième album (!) qui zieute nettement plus du côté mainstream sans pour autant y sombrer totalement comme l’avait fait en son temps Supernatural et consorts. D’ailleurs, on y croit encore avec « Santana Celebration », ses percussions débridées et sa guitare aiguisée. L’album se fait alors l’écho d’un son « classique » mais entame déjà son virage avec « Rumbalero » qui assure malgré tout son côté festif comme le reggae de « Joy » ou encore « Move » qui ne réinvente rien mais se laisse écouter sans déplaisir. En revanche, les choses de gâtent dès la reprise un chouïa inutile – même avec Steve Winwood – de « White Shade of Pale » avant de s’enfoncer dans la pop sirupeuse, à en faire défaillir n’importe quel diabétique de la place, avec quelques duos mielleux (« Break », « Breathing Under Water », « Song For Cindy ») et un rap faisandé (« She’s Fire »). De cet enchevêtrement pour le moins hétéroclite (traduire lourdingue), on sauvera les plus heavy « Peace Power » (avec Corey Glover de Living Colour), « America For Sale » avec Kirk Hammett (Metallica) et Mark Osegueda (Death Angel), le retour aux sources « Mother Yes » ou le plus jazzy « All Together » aux côtés du regretté Chick Corea. Pas de quoi sauver ce Blessing and Miracles dans son intégralité mais à tout prendre, l’album délivre une poignée de titres très recommandables qui devraient donner de quoi méditer aux amateurs de verre à moitié plein ou à moitié vide.

After a particularly invigorating IV (2016) (and an Africa Speaks a bit apart), Santana comes back with a twenty-fourth album (!) that zooms more towards the mainstream without totally sinking into it as Supernatural and its consorts did in their time. Besides, we still believe in it with « Santana Celebration », its unbridled percussions and its sharpened guitar. The album echoes a « classic » sound but already begins its turn with « Rumbalero » which ensures despite everything its festive side as the reggae of « Joy » or « Move » which does not reinvent anything but can be listened without displeasure. On the other hand, things go wrong as soon as the cover of « White Shade of Pale » is a bit useless – even with Steve Winwood – before sinking into the syrupy pop, to make any diabetic in the place faint, with some honeyed duets (« Break », « Breathing Under Water », « Song For Cindy ») and a rap (« She’s Fire »). From this heterogeneous tangle, to say the least, we will save the heaviest « Peace Power » (with Corey Glover of Living Colour), « America For Sale » with Kirk Hammett (Metallica) and Mark Osegueda (Death Angel), the return to the roots « Mother Yes » or the jazzier « All Together » with the late Chick Corea. Not enough to save this Blessing and Miracles in its entirety, but all in all, the album delivers a handful of very recommendable tracks that should give food for thought to fans of glass half full or half empty.
