Long Distance Calling – Eraser

En un peu moins d’une heure, le retour de Long Distance Calling s’apparente à un nouveau coup de massue dans la cristallerie post-rock instrumentale. Il faut préciser que depuis 2006, le combo allemand, et malgré quelques changements de line-up, aura su s’imposer dans un univers phagocyté par des productions souvent ripolinées au carbone. Mais si certains se complaisent à recracher une recette qui a fait ses preuves malgré qu’elle soit très (trop) prévisible à force de répétitions, LDC parvient à avancer en triturant, en tâtonnant, en tentant la jonction, parfois difficiles, avec d’autres marqueurs, sans jamais raboter sur la sophistication de l’ensemble, ni sur la qualité d’une production toujours impeccable. Quelques mois après l’EP “Ghost” déboule ce huitième album studio sobrement intitulé « Eraser ». Pour le groupe, le message évolue de la coexistence de l’humanité (notamment How Do We Want to Live? en 2020) vers quelque chose de plus définitif : l’extinction des espèces et de la nature. Le sujet est posé. Bien accroché, le quatuor stabilisé depuis Boundless (2018) balance alors son savoir-faire au fil des neuf nouveaux titres qui sautillent de la minute introductive et atmosphérique « Enter: Death Box » aux gros morceaux dodus « Bood Honey » et « Eraser ». Entre calme mélancolique (« Sloth » et son saxophone relax) et déflagrations (« Blades », « Kamilah »), l’album ne se cantonne jamais aux habitudes et délaisse, sans les abandonner tout à fait, les aspérités électroniques des précédentes productions au profit de guitares mises en avant du convoi (« 500 Years » et ses effluves Pink Floyd). Même en changeant de braquet sur ses envolées (« Sloth ») le constat d’un album rude et rugueux, conforme aux promesses thématiques, est sans appel. Une effervescence qui tournerait à vide si elle ne servait pas des mélodies brillamment mises en scène. Car il ne faut pas se leurrer, cet Eraser a tout ce qu’il faut pour trôner au sommer d’une discographie déjà pas piquée des hannetons.

In a little less than an hour, the return of Long Distance Calling is like a new blow to the instrumental post-rock crystal. It must be said that since 2006, the German combo, despite a few line-up changes, has managed to impose itself in a universe phagocyted by productions that are often in the same line. But if some people take pleasure to remake things despite being too predictable due to its repetitions, LDC manages to move forward by experimenting, groping and trying to join other styles, without ever reducing the sophistication of the whole, nor the quality of a production that is always impeccable. A few months after the “Ghost” EP, this eighth studio album soberly entitled “Eraser” is released. For the band, the message evolves from the coexistence of humanity (notably How Do We Want to Live? in 2020) to something more definitive: the extinction of species and nature. The subject is set. Well hung, the quartet stabilized since Boundless (2018) then throws its know-how throughout the nine new tracks that jump from the introductory and atmospheric minute “Enter: Death Box” to the big and plump pieces “Bood Honey” and “Eraser”. Between melancholic calm (“Sloth” and its relaxed saxophone) and explosions (“Blades”, “Kamilah”), the album never sticks to the usual and abandons, without abandoning them altogether, the electronic roughness of the previous productions in favour of guitars in front of the convoy (“500 Years” and its Pink Floyd effluences). Even when changing gear on its flights of fancy (“Sloth”), the observation of a rough and rugged album, in conformity with the thematic promises, is without appeal. An effervescence that would turn empty if it didn’t serve brilliantly staged melodies. For let’s not delude ourselves, this Eraser has everything it takes to be at the top of an already impressive discography.
