Chassés croisés. Flash-back.
ENGLISH VERSION
Crossed chases. Flashback. The Texan duo Omar Rodríguez-López and Cedric Bixler-Zavala met on the benches of At the Dive-In, a noisy and vaguely hardcore band whose reputation grew with each album until its implosion in 2001, from which the two friends will extract themselves to form The Mars Volta and to happily hit the prog-rock ant-hill with their mix of metal, jazz and latin folklore, the whole on the background of messy azimuth. The zinzins will throw a De-Loused in the Comatorium (2003) which is still a sharp stone in the garden of the metalorgie à cloche-pied. And the adventure will continue until 2012 when Noctourniquet, their sixth album, will sound the end of the festivities, leaving the two musicians to go to their solo occupations before renewing with… At the Drive-In the time of two resucées: in 2012, briefly, then between 2015 and 2018, period during which will release an in-ter a-li-a (2017) without convincing. Enough to set the record straight. Omar Rodríguez-López and Cedric Bixler-Zavala then take the opportunity to reactivate The Mars Volta, in a well-kept secret, and work on a reboot of the group without however wanting a frank continuity with the past. The ramshackle prog-rock is thus put aside for a more accessible rock, not without a complexity at the margin. Change of gear. For the occasion, Eva Gardner’s bass is back but also Marcel Rodríguez-Lopez while Willy Rodriguez Quiñones and Leo Genovese join this renaissance. Eponymous album, The Mars Volta proposes fourteen titles for a little less than 45 minutes. Carried by the voice of a Bixler at the top, the album rubs ballads (« Shore Story », « Cerulea »), quiet groove (« Graveyard Love », « Flash Burns From Flashbacks », « Palm Full of Crux ») with a classicism at the limit of the mainstream (« Vigil », « No Case Gain »). The band moves forward with a sharp production, perfectly oiled, punctuated with some daring touches (« Blank Condolences », « Que Dios Te Maldiga Mi Corazon », « Equus 3 ») distilled with a sobriety that will paradoxically shake the fans of the first shaggy hours. By smoothing and leaving aside all the complexity that made the DNA of the band, Omar Rodriguez and Cedric Bixler take a calculated and ironic risk, of an inverted audacity that makes a movement towards pop a variable of artistic courage that some sad figures will be able to qualify at leisure as musical suicide. Anyway, this musical tree, far from its original dissonances, has fun with standards with less cryptic texts signed Bixler-Zavala whose legal procrastination against the Church of Scientology is not foreign. A divisive album, The Mars Volta lays the groundwork for a future that is still unknown and uncertain for the band. Something unexpected and fundamentally honest.
