Glass Onion – Une Histoire à Couteaux Tirés

Retour de Benoît Blanc, le plus grand détective du monde pour une nouvelle intrigue cette fois vaguement inspirée de Mort sur le Nil et surtout de l’injustement méconnu Les Invitations Dangereuses réalisé par Herbert Ross avec l’étonnant duo de scénariste Anthony Perkins et Stephen Sondheim, le tout en version île paradisiaque grecque. Avec son mirobolant contrat de plus de 450 millions de dollars en contrepartie de deux suites de A Couteaux Tirés, qui avait connu un beau succès il y a trois ans, le réalisateur-scénariste Rian Johnson (Looper, Star Wars VIII) avait de quoi dépenser sans compter. Pourtant, le budget pourra laisser songeur quant à savoir où est passé le reste du deal. Soit. « Casting is destiny » se plaisait à dire Milos Forman. Pour Glass Onion, Johnson n’aura pas réussi à capitaliser sur une troupe aussi intrigante et homogène que le premier épisode. Entre ancienne gloire (Kate Hudson), acteur limité (Dave Bautista) ou actrice qui monte (Janelle Monáe), le duo principal Daniel Craig – Edward Norton peut cabotiner avec alégresse. Ils savent faire. Si le script tire sans grande subtilité mais de façon assez réjouissante sur les tropes du moment (de la mégalomanie d’un pseudo Elon Musk aux youtubeurs obsessionnels en passant par les politiciens corrompus), le principe du whodunit (traduire qui l’a fait) est une fois encore biaisé dans la propre mise en scène scénaristique d’une intrigue mettant elle-même en scène un faux cadavre. Un jeu de passe-passe narratif un peu vain qui ne fait jamais avancer le genre mais qui pourra parvenir, malgré tout et avec beaucoup d’indulgence, saupoudré d’un état comateux notoire, à amuser la galerie et le spectateur avec. Sans réinventer un genre initié dans les années 70 et bien que Johnson se croit bien plus malin qu’il ne l’est en réalité, Glass Onion est un film lisse, tout en surface mais somme toute mollement divertissant.

Without reinventing a genre initiated in the 70s and although Johnson thinks he is much smarter than he really is, Glass Onion is a smooth film, all surface but all in all softly entertaining.
