The Flower Kings - Islands
4.5TOP 2020

ENGLISH VERSION

Looking at the cover of the Flower Kings‘ fourteenth studio effort, the best mood is here. Designed with a (splendid) artwork of Roger Dean, the shadow of Yes will hover over the Islands again in double-album format. The sixth, barely a year after Waiting for a Miracle ! The numbers are going crazy. Twenty-one titles and more than an hour and a half on the counter, the pandemic will have thus pushed the group to meet, even remotely, earlier than expected but without forgetting their mojo. For if the theme of isolation is at the center of the debates, Islands turns out to be sinuous, voluble, mischievous in the playgrounds it appropriates with a style never plumbed by this chronic depression in fashion among all those who want to make the artist concerned. The Flower Kings do not hesitate to mix genres, to soak up influences, to add symphonic elements, to let the musicians express themselves without hindrance like this introductory track (“Racing with Blinders“) which allows Jonas Reingold to make his bass roar. The rest of the band is in the spotlight, as is often the case, with Roine Stolt as master of ceremonies, surrounded by Hasse Fröberg (vocals, guitar), Zach Kamins (keyboards), and Mirko DeMaio (drums). And these five make sparks! The variations are dense and will require several listenings to be tamed. And despite some interludes that might seem less essential (“Hidden Angles” very festive), it emerges from this very beautiful album, tracks absolutely exciting (“Black Swan“, “Broken“, “Solaris“, “All I Need is Love“), charming (“Morning News“, “Tangerine“) or trippy with their accents of jazzy freedom (“Serpentine“, “Telescope“, “Journeyman“). All of which makes this Islands an album that is both complex in its richness of sound but also very accessible as it is balanced in its mood swings. Remarkable, here is without a doubt one of the Flower Kings‘ discographic summits.
