The Flower Kings – By Royal Decree

Again and again and again… bon, alors, il y en a au fond de la salle qui vont encore se lever pour gueuler contre le mythe de la page blanche tant les Flower Kings, et plus précisément son leader blondin Roine Stolt, semblent cavaler en dehors des clous sur le sujet du manque d’inspiration laconique. Quinzième album du groupe, By Royal Decree est leur 7ème double ration, et le troisième de rang après Waiting For Miracles (2019) et Islands (2020). Des chiffres qui musicalement n’avancent pas à grand chose mais qui en disent long sur leur capacité à remplir les pages blanches. Paradoxalement, les dix-huit morceaux qui jalonnent l’album ne tergiversent jamais dans des circonvolutions interminables. Aucune suite, pas de titres au-delà des sept minutes, l’ensemble reste dans une forme ramassée qui lui donne un rythme soutenu durant  son heure de demie au garot. Au-delà des chiffres et des statistiques de comptoir, la musique, elle, s’avère moins immédiatement séduisante que ses deux prédécesseurs. Rien à voir avec la qualité des musiciens, toujours au taquet : du frangin Michael Stolt aux indéboulonnables Hasse Fröberg et Jonas Reingold en passant par Zach Kamins et Mirkko DeMaio. Nous sommes plutôt dans une forme de construction élaborée qui donnent du fil à retordre à la simplicité (“Revolution”) avec la promesse d’une exécution scénique qui devrait être flamboyante, à l’image d’une setlist qui s’amuse à sautiller avec espièglerie d’une ambiance à l’autre, de l’accordéon sur “Letters” à la belle  instrumentale “Evolution”, du funk fun de “The Big Funk” (le titre est approprié) au piano de “Shrine”. Il serait aisé de lister par le menu les morceaux déployés mais By Royal Decree mérite avant tout qu’on s’y approche avec assez de temps pour l’apprivoiser. Ce que d’aucun pourront considérer comme un retour au son du début des années 2000 (le come-back de Michael Stolt n’y est peut-être pas étranger), ce qui semble parfaitement convenir à Roine Stolt qui assume cette envie de replonger dans un passé pas si lointain, s’expliquera par le travail effectué sur d’anciens morceaux inexploités. Cela n’enlève rien à l’intensité de certains titres (“Blinded”, “World Gone Crazy”, “The Soldier”) même si l’effet de surprise est mis de côté. Quoi qu’il en soit, By Royal Decree reste un album solide. Une fois n’est pas coutume.

Again and again and again… well, then, there are some at the back of the room who will still stand up and shout against the myth of the blank page, so much so that Flower Kings, and more precisely its blond leader Roine Stolt, seem to be running off the rails on the subject of laconic lack of inspiration. The band’s fifteenth album, By Royal Decree is their 7th double ration, and the third in a row after Waiting For Miracles (2019) and Islands (2020). Numbers that musically don’t advance much but that say a lot about their capacity to fill up the blank pages. Paradoxically, the eighteen tracks that punctuate the album never procrastinate in endless convolutions. No sequel, no track longer than seven minutes, the whole remains in a compact form which gives it a sustained rhythm during its hour and a half in the garage. Beyond the numbers and the statistics, the music is less immediately appealing than its two predecessors. It has nothing to do with the quality of the musicians, who are always at the top of their game: from the brother Michael Stolt to the indestructible Hasse Fröberg and Jonas Reingold, via Zach Kamins and Mirkko DeMaio. We’re more into a form of elaborate construction that gives a hard time to simplicity (« Revolution ») with the promise of a stage execution that should be flamboyant, just like a setlist that has fun hopping mischievously from one atmosphere to another, from the accordion on « Letters » to the beautiful instrumental « Evolution », from the funk of « The Big Funk » (the title is appropriate) to the piano of « Shrine ». It would be easy to list the tracks in detail, but By Royal Decree deserves above all to be approached with enough time to tame it. What some may consider as a return to the sound of the early 2000s (Michael Stolt’s comeback is perhaps no stranger to this), which seems to suit Roine Stolt perfectly, who assumes this desire to plunge back into a not so distant past, can be explained by the work done on old, unused tracks. This doesn’t take anything away from the intensity of some tracks (« Blinded », « World Gone Crazy », « The Soldier ») even if the surprise effect is put aside. Anyway, By Royal Decree remains a solid album.
