Rosalie Cunningham – Two Piece Puzzle

Tour de force. Avec la pandémie, toute la petite troupe qui accompagnait Rosalie Cunningham (ex Purson) sur son premier album éponyme est restée à la maison. Pas de quoi empêcher la jeune anglaise de poursuivre sa route épaulée de son compagnon Rosco Wilson, avec Two Piece Puzzle et sa dizaine de titres assurés en catimini et où seul Ric Sanders (Fairport Convention) vient tinter du fiddle. Le duo avance têtes baissées, le regard sur le rétro avec les Beatles en plein dedans évidemment mais aussi toute une brassée d’artistes seventies qui faisaient taper des mains et du pied, et parfois en même temps ! Rythmiques qui frappent, claquent, effluves indiennes (« Tristitia Amnesia » et ses échos de George Harrison), heavy metal de bon ton (« Suck Push Bang Blow »), ambiances jazzy (« The Liner Notes »), parlé (« The War »), en duo (« Duet ») ou instrumental (« Start With the Corners »), les chansons déroulent et déboulent avec sens du festif qui ne tombe jamais à plat. En terrain (archi)connu, l’album aurait pu n’être qu’une redite un peu trop calquée sur les modèles déposés mais ses multiples rebondissements donnent à l’ensemble la matière suffisante pour transformer l’essai sans coup férir.

Tour de force. With the pandemic, all the small band that accompanied Rosalie Cunningham (ex Purson) on her first eponymous album stayed at home. Nothing to prevent the young Englishwoman from continuing her journey with the help of her partner Rosco Wilson, with Two Piece Puzzle and its ten or so titles provided on the sly and where only Ric Sanders (Fairport Convention) comes to play the fiddle. The duet advances heads down, the glance on the retro with the Beatles in full inside obviously but also a whole brew of seventies artists who made clap hands and foot, and sometimes at the same time! Rhythms that hit, slam, Indian fragrances (« Tristitia Amnesia » and its echoes of George Harrison), heavy metal of good tone (« Suck Push Bang Blow »), jazzy atmospheres (« The Liner Notes »), spoken (« The War »), in duet (« Duet ») or instrumental (« Start With the Corners »), the songs unfold and flow with a sense of festivity that never falls flat. In (arch)known ground, the album could have been only a repetition a little too much copied on the deposited models but its multiple twists give to the whole enough matter to transform the test without blowing.
