Tim Bowness – Butterfly Mind

Ayant repris une activité solo plutôt charnue depuis 2014, Tim Bowness (No-Man) revient cette année avec Butterfly Mind histoire de fêter en grandes pompes ses quarante ans de carrière mais pas que. Pour l’occasion, une kyrielle de copains sont venus lui prêter mains fortes au rang desquels Nick Beggs (Steve Hackett Band), Ian anderson (Jethro Tull) ou Greg Spawton (Big Big Train). La liste est longue et le talent au diapason. Sa voix de dandy neurasthénique, suave et posée, se fond toujours parfaitement aux textures instrumentales qui peuplent un univers un peu plus bousculé qu’à l’accoutumé. Les amateurs apprécieront. Dès “Say Your Goodbyes”, notre ami n’hésite pas à jouer les trublions, passant de l’atmosphérique à un rythme tout droit sorti du “Personnal Shopper” de son complice Steven Wilson. Servi par un songwriting toujours aussi propre, l’album sautille sur son pédigré atmosphérique, n’hésitant pas à jouer des cordes, des nappes vaporeuses ou des flamboyances plus rock. Rien à faire, les ambiances sont là. Marquées. Marquantes. Avec son flegme habituel, Tim Bowness peut dérouler entre tempo marqué (“Always the Stranger”) et mélodie éthérée (“It’s Easier to Love”) en assumant des sonorités plus heavy (“We Feel” avec la flûte de Anderson) sans jamais sortir de la route. Alors certes, le coeur de l’album pourrait se limiter à cette succession un poil mécanique entre rugosité et velouté (“Lost Prayer”) mais ce serait sans compter, pour qui y sera sensible, sur le baggage émotionnel que notre ami trimballe. En ajoutant un peu de ferrugineux (“Only a Fool”), Bowness ne se complait pas à jouer les exaltés sur le tard mais préfère travailler ses morceaux à la base sans sortir de son terrain de jeu habituel, avec cet électronique élégant (“Glitter Fades”) qui vaporise parfois à la limite du mélancolique fumeux sur “About the Light that Hits the Forest Floor” pour mieux s’envoler avec “Dark Nevada Dream”, taillé dans l’os, et son gimmick entêtant sur fond de rythmique chaloupée que l’on emporte avec nous pour mieux y revenir. Il s’en trouvera toujours quelques uns pour ramener leur science et prétexter que tout cela n’est finalement pas très différent des précédents albums du bonhomme, le temps, pour leur faire la nique, de faire un dernier plongeon avec “Say Your Goodbyes, Pt. 2” et son violon déchirant, dans une teinte de Mike Oldfield des premières années étonnamment convoquée pour conclure l’un des meilleurs albums de 2022.

Having resumed a rather meaty solo activity since 2014, Tim Bowness (No-Man) is back this year with Butterfly Mind to celebrate his forty years of career in style, but not only. For this album, a host of friends have come to lend him a hand, including Nick Beggs (Steve Hackett Band), Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) and Greg Spawton (Big Big Train). The list is long and the talent is in tune. His voice of a cool dandy, suave and calm, always blends perfectly with the instrumental textures that populate a universe that is a bit more heavy than usual. Fans will appreciate it. As soon as « Say Your Goodbyes », our friend doesn’t hesitate to play the troublemaker, going from the atmospheric to a rhythm straight out of his accomplice Steven Wilson’s « Personnal Shopper ». Served by a songwriting as clean as ever, the album hops on its atmospheric pedigree, not hesitating to play with strings, vaporous layers or more rock flamboyances. With his usual phlegm, Tim Bowness can move between a strong tempo (« Always the Stranger ») and an ethereal melody (« It’s Easier to Love ») while assuming heavier sounds (« We Feel » and Anderson’s flute) without ever going off the road. Of course, the heart of the album could be limited to this slightly mechanical succession of rough and smooth (« Lost Prayer »), but this would be without counting on the emotional baggage that our friend carries around. By adding a bit of heavy (« Only a Fool »), Bowness doesn’t indulge in playing the exalted late, but prefers to work on his songs at the base without leaving his usual playground, With this elegant electronic (« Glitter Fades ») which sometimes vaporizes at the limit of the smoky melancholic on « About the Light that Hits the Forest Floor » to better fly away with « Dark Nevada Dream » and its heady gimmick on a background of swaying rhythmic that we take with us to better come back to it. There will always be some who will claim that all this is not very different from previous albums, time to make a last dive with « Say Your Goodbyes, Pt. 2 » and its heartbreaking violin, in a form of Mike Oldfield of the early years surprisingly invoked to conclude one of the best albums of 2022.
