Morsefest 2018: Jesus Christ the Exorcist
4.3TOP 2020

La ferveur déployée (« Before and After », « Woman of Seven Devils », « Free At Last », « Madman of the Gadarenes ») laisse les spectateurs debouts (« He Must Go To The Cross », « Heart Full of Holes ») avant de délivrer son final épique.

ENGLISH VERSION

It’s all right, Neal Morse is definitely the most prolix artist of the contemporary prog-rock sphere. After his last solo album, Sola Gratia (2020), he had to remind us of his rock opera Jesus Christ The Exorcist recorded in 2018 during his famous annual MorseFest. In between, the studio version had ended up on the turntables after many ups and downs and gave us the opportunity to appreciate once again the great melodist. Of course, those who are allergic to liturgy could pass by or pretend not to understand the lyrics. And that’s a shame because there’s a wealth of talent here that Neal Morse has brought together for the occasion, including Paul Bielatowicz (heard on the Sola Scriptura tour), Ted Leonard (Spock’s Beard), Nick D’Virgilio (Big Big Train, ex Spock’s Beard), Jake Livgren (nephew of Kerry who founded Kansas), Wil Morse (his son) and the trio Bill Hubauer, Eric Gillette, Randy George from the Neal Morse Band. Such a great band!  And it takes a lot to play the 25 tracks of the show spread over more than two hours. Fans of the studio version will hardly be surprised, as this performance is particularly faithful to it. The others will have all the time in the world to discover this music and above all to enjoy it with a very good Blu-Ray, its great image and an editing that doesn’t let itself wander unnecessarily or give in to an epileptic frenzy. Above all, the sound is of excellent quality (DD 5.1 and Stereo) which does not spoil anything to accompany this “inhabited” testimony that Neal Morse carried in him for a long time. The short documentary (Morsefest 2018 – Behind the Curtain) does the job as well but it’s on stage that everything is played out. The fervour displayed (“Before and After“, “Woman of Seven Devils“, “Free At Last“, “Madman of the Gadarenes“) leaves the audience on its feet (“He Must Go To The Cross“, “Heart Full of Holes“) before delivering its epic finale. Proof, if any were needed, that this show would have fit right in on Broadway or in a proper theater. At the very least, you can have it in your collection without hesitation.
