D’Virgilio, Morse & Jennings – Troika

Surprise ! L’annonce de ce nouveau trio aura pu surprendre. Si Neal Morse (NMB, Transatlantic, Flying Colors) et Nick D’Virgilio (NDV, Big Big Train) se connaissent depuis une paye – et la première vie d’un certain Spock’s Beard – il fallait un jour faire le pont avec Ross Jennings, batteur et chanteur de Haken. Surtout, loin de choisir la voie toujours compliquée d’un supergroupe, et tout ce que cela comporte comme egotrip casse-gueule, ces trois là vont opter pour un concept nettement plus folk, plus léger, sensiblement dans les échos d’un Crosby, Stills & Nash pour ne citer qu’un exemple. Né avec le confinement, Troika nous éloigne des longues suites à thèmes et des instrumentalisations azimutées. Retour aux sources, place à l’épure. Des guitares délicates, un peu de percussions, des harmonies vocales, peu d’emphase, le mélodique avant tout. Avec Neal Morse, nous savions que la veine plus acoustique était quelque chose de prégnant vers laquelle il revient périodiquement (Songs From the Highway, Songs From November, Life & Times), comme pour se nettoyer de tout le barnum habituel. Les amphétamines soniques de côté, l’album peut dès lors offrir son lot de chansons attachantes (« Everything I Am”), joliment tricotées (« Julia”), un peu Nashville (« One Time Less”) ou saupoudrées de quelques twists qui sortent du classique couplet/refrain (« You Set My Soul on Fire”, « If I Could”, « A Change Is Gonna Come”). On retrouve évidemment la patte des compositeurs, quelques habitudes également comme la chorale de « Another Trip Around the Sun” qui prouve une fois de plus l’impact d’un groupe comme Gentle Giant sur cette génération de musiciens et quelques accents plus électriques (« King For a Day”, « Second Hand Sons”) qui permettent à Troika ne ne pas faire du sur place même s’il ouvre la porte aux critiques sur la cohésion de l’ensemble. Qu’importe ! L’album de ce nouveau trio s’avère au final un interlude plus qu’agréable dans le tumulte de leur carrière. Nous ne savons pas s’il appellera des suites mais ce serait une bonne nouvelle.

Surprise! The announcement of this new trio may have come as a surprise. If Neal Morse (NMB, Transatlantic, Flying Colors) and Nick D’Virgilio (NDV, Big Big Train) have known each other for a long time – and the first life of a certain Spock’s Beard – it was necessary to bridge the gap with Ross Jennings, drummer and singer of Haken. Above all, far from choosing the always complicated path of a supergroup, and all that it entails in terms of egotrip, these three will opt for a much more folk, lighter concept, in the echoes of Crosby, Stills & Nash to name but one example. Born with containment, Troika takes us away from long thematic suites and azimuthal instrumentalisations. Back to the roots, time for purity. Delicate guitars, a little percussion, vocal harmonies, little emphasis, melodic above all. With Neal Morse, we knew that the more acoustic vein was something prevalent to which he returns periodically (Songs From the Highway, Songs From November, Life & Times), as if to cleanse himself of all the usual barnum. Sonic amphetamines aside, the album can now offer its share of endearing songs (« Everything I Am »), nicely knitted (« Julia »), a bit Nashville (« One Time Less ») or sprinkled with a few twists that get out of the classic verse/chorus (« You Set My Soul on Fire », « If I Could », « A Change Is Gonna Come »). We obviously find the composers’ touch, some habits too like the choir of « Another Trip Around the Sun » which proves once again the impact of a band like Gentle Giant on this generation of musicians and some more electric accents (« King For a Day », « Second Hand Sons ») which allow Troika not to be too much of a pushover even if it opens the door to the critics about the cohesion of the whole. No matter! This new trio’s album turns out to be a more than pleasant interlude in the tumult of their career. We don’t know if it will be followed up, but that would be good news.
