DeUS – How to Replace It

S’il faut reconnaître une chose aux belges de DeUS, c’est bien une reconnaissance internationale qui n’aura pas empêché le groupe d’attendre une dizaine d’années pour revenir sur le devant des platines avec How to Replace It, un huitième album qui poursuit son travail de ripolinage pop sur fond d’acidulé bon teint. Du morceau titre à la rythmique martiale (on pense immédiatement à Archive que le groupe lorgne sans dépasser le mur du son) aux accents nineties de « Must Have Benn New« , DeUS appuie sur les touches d’un rétro assumé et maîtrisé avec quelques lignes mélodiques qui tapent juste et ornées d’une production qui fait un peu plus que le job habituel. Les aspérités mainstream de l’ensemble de doivent pas rebuter. S’ils ne laissent pas la possibilité de verser dans des langueurs et longueurs intempestives, l’efficacité de l’ensemble ne souffre d’aucune contestation. Et les accents de ce qui a fait leur renommé se retrouvent au fil de l’album, les belges ne se permettent pas pour autant de faire du sur place à la manière d’un groupe qui n’aurait plus rien à prouver comme avec le sitar du bluesy « Cadillac« , les intentions crooner de Tom Barman sur « 1989 » ou les claviers de « Man of the House« . Pas de quoi tomber à la renverse mais largement suffisant pour nourrir une très belle promenade musicale.

If we must recognize one thing to the Belgians of DeUS, it is international recognition which did not prevent the group from waiting ten years to return to the front of the decks with How to Replace It, an eighth album which continues its work of pop painting on a background of tangy good complexion. From the title track to the martial rhythm (we immediately think of Archive that the group is eyeing without breaking the sound barrier) to the nineties accents of « Must Have Benn New », DeUS presses the keys of an assumed and mastered retro with a few lines melodic songs that hit the mark and adorned with a production that does a little more than the usual job. The mainstream rough edges of the set should not be put off. If they do not leave the possibility of falling into untimely languor and length, the effectiveness of the whole cannot be disputed. If they rediscover the accents of what made them famous, the Belgians do not allow themselves to stand still like a group that no longer has anything to prove, as with the bluesy sitar « Cadillac « , the crooning intentions of Tom Barman on « 1989 » or the keyboards of « Man of the House ». Not enough to fall backwards but more than enough to fuel a very beautiful musical stroll.
