We Came From Space – Overlords

Si le nom de Bill Hubauer peut aisément être associé à celui de Neal Morse depuis qu’il officie aux claviers du NMB (traduire Neal Morse Band), il ne faudrait pas oublier son autre projet plus prosaïquement nommé We Came From Space. Entouré de Dave Buzard (guitare), Dave Hawk (basse) et Tim Malone (batterie), la formation propose depuis 2013 une musique bien calibrée dans la mouvance d’un Kansas, mais aussi Styx ou même Uriah Heep, et qu’on aura pu apprécier à travers deux premiers albums How to Be Human (2013) et While You Were Away (2018). Avec Overlods, pas de concept prégnant mais des thèmes qui serpente au fil des chansons, tels le contrôle de la population, l’intelligence artificielle, la technologie, et autres joyeusetés un tantinet sci-fi. De quoi envelopper les choses avec du charnu. Les musiciens ne sont pas en reste. Avec des élastiques comme “She’s the Bomb / Atomic Blues“, “Seize the Day“ et le morceau titre, We Came From Space savent étirer les choses sans jouer les cache misère. Comme sait le faire Neal Morse, le groupe parvient même à balancer des gros morceaux de d’accents pop dans leur recette qui alterne également prog symphonique, riffs charnus et autres effets sonores bienvenus quand ce n’est pas un réjouissant mélange des genres qui vient nous secouer : honkytonk et ragtime de “On the Radio“, les ballades “Empty Space“ et “Silent Letters“, le rock seventies (“Reputation“ ou le reggae de “She’s the Bomb“ qui amorce l’instrumentale de haute volée “Atomic Blues“. Les paysages sont assez variés et solidement interprétés pour permettre à l’auditeur de rester caler au fond de son siège, apprécier la vue et le reste. En un peu moins d’une heure, ces huit morceaux offrent assez de répondants pour transformer ce qui pouvait s’apparenter comme une récréation de haut vol en groupe prog-rock ultra-solide à ne pas quitter des yeux, ni des oreilles.

Bill Hubauer’s name has been associated with Neal Morse since his days as keyboardist with the NMB (Neal Morse Band), but we shouldn’t forget his other, more prosaically named project, We Came From Space. Surrounded by Dave Buzard (guitar), Dave Hawk (bass) and Tim Malone (drums), the band has been offering well-calibrated music in the vein of Kansas, Styx and even Uriah Heep since 2013, and we’ve been able to appreciate it on two debut albums, How to Be Human (2013) and While You Were Away (2018). With Overlods, there’s no overarching concept, just themes that meander through the songs, such as population control, artificial intelligence, technology and other sci-fi nonsense. Enough to wrap things up in a meaty package. The musicians are not to be outdone. With elastics like “She’s the Bomb / Atomic Blues”, “Seize the Day” and the title track, We Came From Space know how to stretch things out without playing hide-and-seek. As Neal Morse is wont to do, the band even manage to throw in a few pop-flavoured chunks in their recipe, which also alternates symphonic prog, meaty riffs and other welcome sound effects, when it’s not a delightful mix of genres that comes to shake us up: These include the honkytonk and ragtime of “On the Radio”, the ballads “Empty Space” and “Silent Letters”, the seventies rock of “Reputation” and the reggae of “She’s the Bomb”, which kicks off the high-flying instrumental “Atomic Blues”. The landscapes are varied enough and solidly performed to allow the listener to sit back and enjoy the view and everything else. In just under an hour, these eight tracks offer enough to transform what could have been a high-flying recreation into an ultra-solid prog-rock band you won’t want to take your eyes or ears off.
