Big Big Train - Reflectors of Light
4.5Note Finale

ENGLISH VERSION

For the past few years, Big Big Train has been pursuing its rather hallucinating production rhythm: four studio productions (Folklore, Grimspound, The Second Brightest Star, Grand Tour) and just as many stage testimonials have been released on turntables and DVD/Blu-Ray players. The latest one being the object we are interested in: Reflectors of Light. So, of course, the question that arises with such a production is whether this newcomer brings something really new or whether, for the most part, he wouldn’t be doing in the resurgence, even luxurious, of what we’ve already tasted before.

And the first thing that strikes you from the outset is the total absence of an excerpt from Grand Tour… and with good reason, since the performance brings together the best of concerts recorded between September and October 2017. On the other hand, we find here many excerpts from Folklore (“London Plane”, “Telling the Bees” and the unbeatable “Wassail”), Grimspound (including the indispensable “Brave Captain”), English Electric (“Judas Unrepentant”), “Swan Hunter”, “East Coast Racer”) and even The Underfall Yards (“Last Train”, “Victorian Brickwork”) and an excerpt from The Difference Machine in the bonuses with the re-recording at Real World studios of “Summer’s Lease”.

As for the surprises, it’s a bit of a waste. As for the rest, the setlist hits the top of the basket with a chord interpretation and a very well mixed sound with thirteen perfectly audible musicians. Finally, the image remains of high quality with an editing that forgets no one for a Blu-Ray that will not transfigure the format but will give, for those who wish to discover Big Big Train, an exhaustive overview of the immense talent of a band that keeps on growing.
