Dave Foster Band – Glimmer

S’il a su multiplier les projets au fil de sa carrière déjà bien remplie, notamment avec Mr So & So, The Steve Rothery Band, Big Big Train et Panic Room, l’ami Dave Foster a toujours essayé de prendre le temps de façonner les choses autour de son nom, que ce soit avec Dreamless sorti en 2016 ou le « band » sur Gravity (2010), Nocebo (2019) et le nouveau venu qui nous intéresse, Glimmer. Entouré de la chanteuse Dinet Poortman qui porte l’album d’une voix toujours posée là où il faut, le reste du line-up ne souffre d’aucune approximation avec le bassiste Neil Fairclough (actuellement avec Queen), le batteur Leon Parr (Steve Rothery Band) et les claviers de Anthony Hindley. De quoi donner aux huit titres proposés la matière nécessaire pour faire décoller un album qui n’en demandait pas tant. De l’introduction « Every Waking Moment » où la guitare de Foster tape déjà dans le dur sur fond de ciel chargé d’un orage menaçant, avant des titres plus accessibles diront certains, mais pas moins euphorisants (« Run » et son refrain entêtant, « Stigma » et ses riffs tendus) et jusqu’aux sources de Pink Floyd et du mentor Steve Rothery (on ne se refait pas) qui abreuvent le splendide final « The Rules Have Changed« . L’ensemble sonne juste, à la lisière d’un rock estampillé qui s’autorise quelques embardées hirsutes sans jamais tomber dans le trop lourd. Dave Foster, à l’instar d’un Steven Wilson long-temps resté dans l’ombre d’un genre qui échappait au mainstream, ou d’un Bruce Soord, trousse ce Glimmer avec un sens de l’écriture toujours aussi aiguisé. Dans le sillage d’un Steve Vantsis autre compositeur ultra-doué qui reste malheureusement trop sous les radars, le guitariste propose une nouvelle fois un album très réussi qui saura combler les amateurs de titres exigeants, sans prise tête et gorgé de morceaux de bravoure savoureux. Pourquoi se priver ?

Even as he has multiplied projects throughout his already accomplished career, notably with Mr So & So, The Steve Rothery Band, Big Big Train, and Panic Room, our friend Dave Foster has always tried to take the time to shape things around his own name, whether it be with Dreamless released in 2016 or the ‘band’ on Gravity (2010), Nocebo (2019), and the newcomer that interests us, Glimmer. Surrounded by the singer Dinet Poortman, who carries the album with a voice always poised where it should be, the rest of the lineup suffers no approximation with bassist Neil Fairclough (currently with Queen), drummer Leon Parr (Steve Rothery Band), and keyboards by Anthony Hindley. This gives the eight offered tracks the necessary material to launch an album that didn’t ask for so much. From the introduction « Every Waking Moment » where Foster’s guitar is already hitting hard against a backdrop of a sky charged with a threatening storm, to more accessible tracks according to some, but no less euphoric (« Run » with its haunting chorus, « Stigma » with its tense riffs), and up to the sources of Pink Floyd and mentor Steve Rothery (some things never change) that nourish the splendid final track « The Rules Have Changed. » The whole sounds just right, on the edge of a stamped rock that allows for some hairy detours without ever falling into the too heavy. Dave Foster, like a Steven Wilson who spent a long time in the shadow of a genre that eluded the mainstream, or a Bruce Soord, crafts Glimmer with a writing sense that is always sharp. In the wake of a Steve Vantsis, another extremely talented but unfortunately too under-the-radar composer, the guitarist once again offers a very successful album that will satisfy fans of demanding, headache-free tracks filled with delicious bravado. Why deprive oneself?
