Steve Lukather – I Found the Sun Again

Huit ans après Transition (2013) revoici l’ami Steve Lukather et sa MusicMan sur le dos ou plutôt dans les mains (c’est plus pratique). Avec I Found the Sun Again, le guitariste signe ce qu’il qualifie d’ores et déjà comme son dernier album solo. Rien que ça. Après un dernière tournée de Toto, « 40 Trips Around the Sun » qui s’est soldée par un clash en bonne et due forme et un rendez-vous chez les avocats, la parution de son autobiographie « The Gospel According To Luke » qui reçut un bel accueil à la fois critique et public – à tel point qu’une suite est à l’étude – la sortie de ce nouvel album profite également d’une situation sanitaire qui lui aura laissé la possibilité de potasser ses gammes. Et des gammes il en a bouffé le Luke mais sans jamais en faire le plat principal ni la raison d’une indigestion de notes où la quantité se substituerait à la qualité. Avec Steve Lukather, nous sommes plus proche d’un Larry Carlton (avec qui il a collaboré lors d’une célèbre tournée) et d’un blues californien rutilant que d’une machinerie pour triple croches au taquet. Si l’ombre de Toto plane parfois sur les ambiances de l’album, c’est surtout par le concours de Joseph Williams sur plusieurs morceaux et notamment le très Beatles « Run to Me » (avec Ringo Starr à la batterie pour enfoncer le clou) alors que ce dernier sort au même moment son propre album solo (Denizen Tenant) avec… Steve sur la liste des invités. Un chassé-croisé plutôt festif avec également son acolyte David Paich et Greg Bissonette qui joua des baguettes avec Lukather sur ses projets solo, Toto et Los Lobotomys. Réunion de famille en quelque sorte. Plutôt en forme. Avec huit titres dont trois reprises (« Bridge of Sighs » de Robin Tower, « The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys » de Traffic et « Welcome to the Club » de Joe Walsh), le guitariste offre un florilège qui ne se la pète jamais, joue solide, droit, et balance quelques beaux moments instrumentaux. Rien qui renverse la table mais suffisamment pour passer un moment chaleureux en très bonne compagnie. Et ça, c’est déjà un beau cadeau.
