Ozric Tentacles – Space for the Earth

Dans la catégorie du rock space-psychédélique purement instrumental je demande le patriarche. Ne nous leurrons pas, Ozric Tentacles c’est aujourd’hui 35 ans de carrière et ce vingt et unième album intitulé Space for the Earth. Si la formation toujours tenue par Ed Wynne (seul membre fondateur encore présent) est toujours bien là, il faut avouer qu’elle se fait malgré tout plus rare que dans ses jeunes années. La cause à la fatalité (un incendie a détruit tout le matériel et les archives de Wynne dans sa maison du Colorado) et à un style pour le moins marqué. Ces rythmiques chaloupées (« Humboldt Currant »), indélébiles, ces guitares qui virevoltent, ces claviers typiques, donnent une nouvelle fois dans une succession de titres que certains pourront aisément cataloguer comme déjà-entendus ou répétitifs. Certes, le son de Ozric Tentacles est assez unique pour que la succession d’albums puisse donner cette impression de multiplication à l’identique. Pourtant, la patte du groupe est indéniable dans ce mélange d’influences Gong et Hawkwind, tout en livrant quelque chose de furieusement personnel. Et une fois encore, on pourra se laisser prendre au jeu entre apartés jazzy ou world music (« Blooperdome »). Avec sa production impeccable et ses ambiances qui permettent un décollage immédiat, Ozric Tentacles n’a ni perdu la main, ni la recette de son succès. En ressort un Space for the Earth qui pourra frustrer les prosélytes du changement mais ravir les amateurs d’un groupe qu’ils n’avaient plus gouté depuis un lustre.

In the category of purely instrumental space-psychedelic rock I ask for the patriarch. Let’s not fool ourselves, Ozric Tentacles is now 35 years old and this twenty-first album entitled Space for the Earth. If the band, led by Ed Wynne (the only founding member) is still there, it must be admitted that it is more rare than in its younger years. The cause is fatality (a fire destroyed all Wynne‘s equipment and archives in his Colorado home) and a style that is, to say the least, marked. The indelible, swaying rhythms (“Humboldt Currant“), the twirling guitars, the typical keyboards, once again give way to a succession of tracks that some might easily label as already heard or repetitive. It’s true that Ozric Tentacles‘ sound is unique enough that the succession of albums could give the impression of repetition. However, the band’s touch is undeniable in this mix of Gong and Hawkwind influences, while delivering something furiously personal. And once again, we can get caught up in the game between jazzy asides or world music (“Blooperdome“). With its impeccable production and its atmospheres that allow an immediate take-off, Ozric Tentacles has neither lost its touch nor its recipe for success. The result is Space for the Earth, which may frustrate the proselytizers of change but will delight the fans of a band they haven’t tasted for ages.
