Liquid Tension Experiment - LTE 3
4.0TOP 2021

ENGLISH VERSION

There are comebacks that we don’t really hope for, with some softness in the knee and cash to boot. There are also returns awaited for ages, such as an urban legend, and that of Liquid Tension Experiment (LTE for close friends) clearly falls into this category. After two consecutive albums (LTE 1 in 98 and LTE 2 in 99) recorded in the emergency and the vapors of improvisations, the quartet went to sleep – we will evacuate the extra tracks from Spontaneous Combustion in 2007 – in the wake of the arriving of Jordan Rudess in Dream Theater. It must be said with Mike Portnoy and John Petrucci, our friends still had the impression of an instrumental version of the metal combo where only Tony Levin was the free electron. And then time flies, the angers, the paths that separate until last year when Petrucci and Portnoy musically buried the hatchet to release the guitarist’s second solo album (Terminal Velocity, 2020). Enough to get back into the match and so the Dream Theater tour canceled due to the pandemic, time has become available to them to relaunch the crazy idea of a new opus from Liquid Tension Experiment. A sea serpent long evoked, touched, materialized around seven original titles and an adaptation of “Rhapsody in Blue” by Gershwin. Enough to feed the ambitions of the quartet which is embarking on a great instrumental race with this hallucinating ability to chain together musical roller coasters.

“After over 20 years since the last time we recorded together, the four of us stepped into the studio and it was as if no time had passed at all! All of the magic that made the first two LTE albums so special was still there and we had such a great time making this record. I’m extremely proud of what we created together and can’t wait for everyone to hear it!” – John Petrucci

So it is true, many consider that a supergroup is most often a purely technical avatar and not the sum of the talents present. Liquid Tension Experiment could prove them wrong. Not that this new album projects things to heights never reached, we could even prefer the second opus, but we must recognize that these four know how to play without stepping on each other. It’s rare enough to underline it. And the result indeed sounds like a real meeting of friends who have fun spinning compositions where each has its effect around fundamentally metal melodies (“Hypersonic”, “The Passage of Time”) which sometimes seem to extricate themselves from previous albums. (“Beating the Odds”) but also more atmospheric (“Liquid Evolution”), sticky (“Chris & Kevin’s Amazing Odyssey”) or catchy tracks (“Shades of Hope” in cousin of “State of Grace”). The whole condenses quite logically in the final piece “Key to the Imagination” which connects riffs, rhythms and atmospheres with a rather disconcerting ease to definitively transform this meeting into a great success.
