Bruce Springsteen – Only the Strong Survive

Cinquante ans et des arpèges après Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. revoici l’inoxydable Bruce Springsteen bardé d’un vingt et unième album studio composé d’une quinzaine de reprises soul pas piquées des hannetons. Au menu, les Commodores, Jerry Butler, Frankie Valli, Ben E. King et autres Four Tops. En devenant une véritable institution, le Boss peut aujourd’hui faire ce qui lui chante. Ça tombe bien. Chansons originales ou reprises, mettons immédiatement le suspens de côté en écrivant à brûle pourpoint que le résultat n’est pas tout à fait au niveau du festif et exquis We Shall Overcome (2007) dans lequel les réinterprétations de Pete Seeger excellaient dans le festif en laissant transpirer une communauté de musiciens au diapason. Pour autant, rien à voir non plus avec le lot de reprises des fatigués (pour ne pas dire fatigants) Rod Stewart et Phil Collins. Ici, le chanteur de 73 ans est toujours sur la brèche. Cela donne de grands moments (« Soul Days » avec Sam Moore de Sam & Dave, « Nightshift ») et quelques cahots où la version crooner de Springsteen patine sur des standards déjà maintes fois adaptés (« The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore », « What Becomes of the Brokenhearted »). Mais dès qu’il renoue avec un univers musical plus habituel (« Do I Love You (Indeed I Do) », « Turn Back the Hands of Time », « When She Was My Girl ») ou qu’il se décide à casser la baraque, le chanteur démontre une nouvelle fois quel instrument fantastique reste sa voix cassée, mutante (« Hey, Western Union Man » qui frôle le gospel ou « 7 Rooms of Gloom ») qui fascinerait même à la lecture d’un annuaire. A corps perdu mais à cordes vocales au sommet, le chanteur prouve une nouvelle fois son amour pour le genre et ne vole aucun morceau, aucun titre. Certains pinailleront sur le fait qu’il puise dans les standards de sa jeunesse, comme une nostalgie mal placée, mais il ne faut pas s’y tromper : s’il ne s’agit pas d’un incontournable de notre ami, qui en a produit plus d’un, Only the Strong Survive reste un album sincère et en tout point Rauque’n’Roll.

Fifty years and many arpeggios after Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. the Boss is back with his twenty-first studio album, consisting of about fifteen soulful covers. On the menu are the Commodores, Jerry Butler, Frankie Valli, Ben E. King and the Four Tops. By becoming a real institution, the Boss can now do what he wants. And that’s good. Original songs or covers, let’s immediately put the suspense aside by writing that the result is not quite on the level of the festive and exquisite We Shall Overcome (2007) in which Pete Seeger’s reinterpretations excelled in the festive by letting a community of musicians sweat in tune. However, this is nothing like the batch of covers by the tired (not to say tiresome) Rod Stewart and Phil Collins. Here, the 73-year-old singer is always on the road. This gives great moments (« Soul Days » with Sam Moore from Sam & Dave, « Nightshift ») and a few bumps where the crooner version of Springsteen skates on standards already adapted many times over (« The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore », « What Becomes of the Brokenhearted »). But as soon as he returns to a more usual musical universe (« Do I Love You (Indeed I Do) », « Turn Back the Hands of Time », « When She Was My Girl ») or when he decides to break the mould, the singer shows once again what a fantastic instrument his broken, mutant voice remains (« Hey, Western Union Man » which borders on gospel or « 7 Rooms of Gloom ») which would even fascinate when reading a phone book. The singer proves once again his love for the genre and doesn’t steal a single song or title. Some may nitpick at the fact that he draws from the standards of his youth, like a misplaced nostalgia, but don’t be mistaken: if it’s not a must-have by our friend, who produced more than one, Only the Strong Survive remains a sincere album and in every way rock’n’roll.
