The Tangent – Songs From The Hard Shoulder

Du prog rock qui fait le job, toutes armes dehors et avec les attributs qu’on lui souhaite, du mouvement, de la cassure nette, des échappées belles… voici tout l’arsenal de The Tangent à nouveau sur le fronton pour un douzième album studio qui reprend au passage le strict line-up du précédent opus Auto Reconnaissance (2020). Aux côtés de Andy Tillison, nous retrouvons donc les sémillants Jonas Reingold (basse), Theo Travis (saxophone, flute), Luke Machin (guitare) et Steve Roberts (batterie). Pour la setlist, l’amateur sera servi avec cinq morceaux seulement dont trois (quatre dans l’édition limitée) au-dessus du quart d’heure de jeu ! Du pur prog. Et du storytelling ! Par exemple The Changes”, écrit durant le premier confinement, évoque joyeusement les aventures de The Tangekanic (mélange de The Tangent et de Karmakanic) en Allemagne, membre d’un groupe paumé à la recherche d’un hôtel après un concert pour lequel ils ne furent pas payés, est un exemple de savoir-faire dans le mélange mélodique et les rebondissements multiples. Le titre rayonne littéralement et offre une nouvelle occasion d’apprécier la technicité des musiciens sans que cela ne puisse être assimilé à de la poudre aux oreilles. C’est le propre de The Tangent de savoir jouer dans un style prog/fusion jamais hermétique. ”The GPS Vultures” balance clairement dans cette catégorie qui donne cette patine si particulière, ce sentiment d’improvisation maîtrisée au fil d’une instrumentale qui ne lâche jamais l’auditeur avec un impressionnant boulot de Luke Machin qui enflamme le tout de sa guitare incandescente. La suite enfonce le clou. La vingtaine de minutes de ”The Lady Tied to the Lamp Post” passe comme un déjeuner de soleil avec ses influences Canterbury avant que le seul titre courtaud, ”Wasted Soul”, vienne flirter avec un funk bien groove. Les possesseurs de l’édition limitée profiteront de la reprise du classique signé U.K. ”In the Dead of Night / Tangential Aura / Reprise”. De quoi clôturer les hostilités de la meilleure des façons et transformer ce Songs From the Hard Shoulder en nouvelle réussite.

A prog rock that does the job, all weapons out and with the attributes we want it to have, movement, clean breaks, beautiful escapes, here is the whole arsenal of The Tangent back on the pediment for a twelfth album studio which takes over the strict line-up of the previous opus Auto Reconnaissance (2020). Alongside Andy Tillison, we find the sparkling Jonas Reingold (bass), Theo Travis (saxophone, flute), Luke Machin (guitar) and Steve Roberts (drums). On the setlist side, the amateur will be served with only five tracks, three of which (four in the limited edition) over a quarter of an hour of play! Pure prog. And storytelling! For example « The Changes », written during the first confinement, which happily evokes the adventures of The Tangekanic (mixture of The Tangent and Karmakanic) in Germany, lost in search of a hotel after a concert for which they were not paid, is an example of know-how in melodic mixing and multiple twists. The title literally shines and offers a new opportunity to appreciate the technicality of the musicians without it being like dust to the ears. It is characteristic of The Tangent to know how to play in a prog/fusion style that is never hermetic. « The GPS Vultures » clearly balances in this category which gives this very particular patina, this feeling of controlled improvisation over an instrumental which never lets go of the listener with an impressive work by Luke Machin in particular, which ignites the album of his incandescent guitar. The sequel drives the point home. The twenty minutes of « The Lady Tied to the Lamp Post » passes like a sunny lunch with its Canterbury influences before the only short title « Wasted Soul » flirts with a well-grooved funk. Owners of the limited edition will enjoy the cover of the U.K. classic « In the Dead of Night / Tangential Aura / Reprise ». Enough to close the hostilities in the best way and transform this « Songs From the Hard Shoulder » into a new success.
