Dogman

Haute tension ! Avec Dogman, le réalisateur italien Matteo Garrone revient à un style asséché et tendu, celui de Gomorra (2008). En scrutant la relation maître/esclave entre un toiletteur pour chiens amateur de plongée (Marcello Fonte) et un truand notoire déglingué Simoncino (Edoardo Pesce), le cinéaste explore les aspérités les plus obscures d’une humanité en décomposition. Une descente brutale, à en inverser les perspectives et travestir la victime en bourreau… jusqu’à la nausée. Neuf David di Donatello (équivalents de nos César) couronneront cette lente descente dans la grisaille, la misère, et la vision du monde porté par le regard d’un acteur hors norme : Marcello Fonte. Bouleversant. Totalement inconnu, cet ancien gardien d’un centre social dédié aux ex-détenus avait remplacé, au débotté, l’un d’entre eux subitement décédé, avant de participer au casting du film. Les lois d’un hasard qui le porteront jusqu’à un prix d’interprétation Cannois. Mérité ! Véritable persona, sa trogne finira de convaincre Matteo Garrone de se consacrer au film après dix années d’hésitation face à la noirceur de son sujet. Mais le charbonneux à ses vertus et si les humiliations se referment comme un piège inéluctable pour son personnage principal, le film évite d’étouffer complètement les spectateurs avec son chorus canin qui apportent paradoxalement une touche d’humanité, une lumière de faible intensité face au tumulte nihiliste qui se prépare. En témoins encagés, les chiens ne peuvent qu’observer, impuissants, cette autre forme de bestialité. Inspiré par un fait divers, Dogman dépasse le simple cadre de la tragédie. En enveloppant son récit d’un constat social sans appel, le film scrute son personnage, interroge la perte de l’innocence et la conséquence de ses choix. Jusqu’à l’abandonner, seul, dans les abîmes d’une fatalité antique.

DOGMAN

Simply gripping! In Dogman, Italian director Matteo Garrone harks back to a bleak and tense style used in Gomorra (2008). By examining the master-slave relationship between a dog‑groomer and diving enthusiast portrayed by Marcello Fonte, and Simoncino, a notorious, deranged thug played by Edoardo Pesce, the film maker explores the darkest edges of humanity in the throes of decomposition. The screenplay unravels in a brutal descent to the point where the tables are turned, and the victim is transformed into an executioner in a stomach-churning dénouement. Nine David di Donatello awards (the equivalent of the French César) rewarded this slow plunge into gloom, misery and the vision of a world seen through the eyes of an extraordinary actor, Marcello Fonte. Distressing. Completely unknown, the former caretaker of a social center for ex-prisoners replaced one of the ex-prisoners at the last minute after the latter fell ill and suddenly died during auditions conducted by the director. Fonte later joined the cast of the film. The laws of chance would take him to the Cannes Film Festival where he received his richly deserved Best Actor trophy. A real character, his face finally convinced Matteo Garrone to devote himself to the film after hesitating for ten years due to the grimness of the story. But the protagonist has his virtues and although humiliations close in on his character like an inevitable trap, the film manages to avoid completely smothering the audience thanks to its canine chorus, which, paradoxically, adds a touch of humanity and a glimmer of light as the nihilistic turmoil begins to unfold. As caged witnesses, dumb and powerless, the dogs can merely watch this other form of bestiality. Inspired by a true story, Dogman is more than a simple tragedy. By cloaking the narrative with unmistakable social observation, the film dissects the character, questions the loss of innocence and the consequence of his choices. Until it abandons him, alone, in the abyss of an ancient, inevitable fate.
