Anneke Van Giersbergen – The Darkest Skies Are the Brightest

Pas simple ces derniers temps. Anneke van Giersbergen (ex The Gathering) aura du traverser des difficultés personnelles et professionnelles (notamment avec son projet Vuur dans lequel elle aura beaucoup investi) pour ressentir un besoin d’écrire salvateur. Une façon de se libérer également et trouver la sortie. En passant par « l’isolement d’une petite maison près des bois », la chanteuse ne s’encombrera que d’une guitare acoustique afin de développer la colonne vertébrale de The Darkest Skies are the Brightest qui déboule sept ans après Drive.

En allant à l’essentiel, aux mélodies simplement arrangées autour de quelques instruments (violons, cordes), l’album se dénude dans une lumière automnale dénué de toute prétention ou trop plein de carburant incandescent. Très personnels et en même temps universels par les thèmes qu’ils traitent, ces onze titres déploient avant tout le terrain mélodique pour la voix d’Anneke. Et quelle voix ! Avec cette capacité à vous attraper par les sentiments (« My Promise », « The End »), elle vous embarque sur un terrain cabossé mais jamais dépressif, où affleure l’idée que tout peut être réparé (« Survive »), recollé. Ces petits instants de vie dans lesquels la chanteuse hollandaise peut jouer de toutes ses nuances, s’avère ici un joli terrain fertile en émotions. Une façon, également, de se réinventer en creusant un sillon autobiographique moins habituel. A l’évidence, l’essai est transformé.

Not simple lately. Anneke van Giersbergen (ex The Gathering) has had to go through personal and professional difficulties (especially with her Vuur project in which she has invested a lot) to feel the need to write in a saving way. A way of freeing herself too and finding the way out. Going through the “a small house near the woods“, the singer will only have to carry an acoustic guitar in order to develop the backbone of The Darkest Skies are the Brightest which comes seven years after Drive.

Going to the essentials, to melodies simply arranged around a few instruments (violins, strings), the album denudes itself in an autumnal light devoid of any pretension or too full of incandescent fuel. Highly personal and at the same time universal in the themes they deal with, these eleven tracks deploy above all the melodic ground for Anneke‘s voice. And what a voice! With this ability to catch you by your feelings (“My Promise“, “The End“), she takes you on a dented but never depressing terrain, where the idea that everything can be repaired (“Survive“), glued back together, comes to the surface. These little moments of life in which the Dutch singer can play with all her nuances, turns out here to be a pretty fertile ground for emotions. A way, too, of reinventing herself by digging a less usual autobiographical furrow. Obviously, the essay is transformed.
