The Tangent – Pyramids, Stars & Other Stories: The Tangent Live Recordings 2004-2017

Pour les amateurs de longueurs exacerbées et de live débridés, ces enregistrements scéniques étirés sur plus de deux heures vingt donneront un aperçu sinon complet tout au moins passionnant de la trajectoire de The Tangent. En couvrant la période 2004-2017 (comme son titre l’indique), Andy Tillison a choisi de réunir trois concerts jusqu’ici disponibles sous forme de bootlegs avec des formations à géométrie variable puisque The Tangent aura connu pas mal de bouleversements au fil des ans. Quelques extraits d’un concert en Allemagne donné en 2004, avec Roine Stolt et une partie des Flower Kings alors dans les rangs, la tournée COMM de 2011 en Angleterre (Southend-on-Sea) et la formation actuelle saisie aux Etats-Unis, dans le New-Jersey, en 2017. Ce qui transpire de ces expériences reste la communion entre les musiciens et le public acquis à leur cause. A travers cette compilation, c’est aussi un best-of du bestiaire signé Andy Tillison qui éclate sur les planches. Le premier CD remasterise donc Pyramids and Stars avec les piliers « The Music That Died Alone », « In Darkest Dreams » et « The World we Drive Through » avec en bonus une réinterprétation de « Lucky Man » de Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Vues les conditions d’enregistrement, assez brutes, tout n’est pas parfait mais cela participe également au concept du projet de nous placer au cœur du réacteur. Le second CD propose sept titres avec « Perdu Dans Paris », « A Spark in the Aether » et les bonus CD avec le mastoc « Titanic Calls Carpathia » et « Two Rope Swings ». Les fans de The Tangent trouveront forcément de quoi se rassasier en écoutant ces interprétations qui ne contentent pas de reproduire sans vergogne les versions studio. Andy Tillison et ses acolytes parviennent à suffisamment triturer leur matière première pour donner un second souffle à ces morceaux.

For fans of exacerbated lengths and unbridled live performances, these stage recordings stretched over more than two hours and twenty minutes will give an overview, if not complete, at least fascinating, of The Tangent’s trajectory. Covering the period 2004-2017 (as its title indicates), Andy Tillison has chosen to gather three concerts so far available as bootlegs with formations of variable geometry since The Tangent will have experienced quite a few upheavals over the years. Some excerpts from a concert in Germany in 2004, with Roine Stolt and part of the Flower Kings in the ranks, the 2011 COMM tour in England (Southend-on-Sea) and the current line-up captured in the United States, in New Jersey, in 2017. What transpires from these experiences is the communion between the musicians and the audience that has taken up their cause. Through this compilation, it is also a best-of of Andy Tillison’s bestiary that bursts onto the scene. The first CD remastered Pyramids and Stars with the mainstays ‘The Music That Died Alone’, ‘In Darkest Dreams’ and ‘The World we Drive Through’ with a bonus performance of ‘Lucky Man’ by Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Given the rather rough recording conditions, not everything is perfect, but it also contributes to the project’s concept of placing us at the heart of the reactor. The second CD features seven tracks with ‘Perdu Dans Paris’, ‘A Spark in the Aether’ and bonus CDs with the mastoc ‘Titanic Calls Carpathia’ and ‘Two Rope Swings’. Fans of The Tangent are bound to find something to satisfy their appetite with these interpretations, which don’t just shamelessly reproduce the studio versions. Andy Tillison and his cohorts manage to shake up their raw material enough to give these songs a second life.
